3 month old smiling in pics?

I feel like it is impossible for us to get a pic of Toodle smiling. He'll smile at us when we're playing and stuff but only for a second or two at a time and we still can't get him to regularly smile on cue. He looks so serious in all his pics! How do you get your baby to smile for pictures? Is he abnormally serious? I see pics of 6 week olds with big grins and wonder what the deal is...

Re: 3 month old smiling in pics?

  • I have a hard time getting DS to smile sometimes at 4 months. What usually happens is I get him to smile and raise the camera and he stops. It helps if someone stands behind you, like DH, and makes faces or whatever and gets him to smile so you can snap it really quickly.

Talk all happy/obnoctiously and do stupid things or make silly sounds. lol...seriously, the things I do to get my little guy to laugh or smile....DH thinks I'm nuts!! ...but it works!! Embarrassed

  • It seems like DD is all smiles until the camera comes out. I swear she does it on purpose :) It takes me what seems like an eternity of standing in front of her with a camera, talking and making silly faces to get 1 smiley picture.

  • I have the same issue.  I think our girls get distracted by the camera or video camera.  They will smile if they're looking at us smiling at them, but then the camera gets in the way and it disappears.
  • Take photos in long long bursts?  That's my only tip.  Last night during bath time I took over 400 photos - and that was in basically five minutes.  Just continuously pressing the shutter guarantees something good, maybe even a smile. My iPhoto looks like a flip book.  After I cull them there will be at least one great shot in there.

  • ginny hates the camera (just like mama.) it takes us at least 50 shots to finally get a smile (or a hint of a smile.) she always looks so serious or surly.

    I feel your pain.

  • Continuous shooting.  It's the only way.  Funny thing though, she'll often smile right away so the first few shots are full of smiles then throughout the rest of the series she pulls out the serious face.

  • for me it was hard - here's why....my camera blinks red (is that for red eye??) and that freaks him out so the smile goes away.  I try to take video to at least capture some smiles - mainly from my camera (high definition videos).

at his 4 m profesional pics he didn't smile in any of them, but he smiles at home all the time.  they came out great though as he still looks cute.  WE have gotten better at taking smiling pics and so will you.  I usually have to take a ton ot get 1 good one...

he did smile for his 6m pics....

  • Thanks everyone! Continuous shooting would be great but our crappy camera takes about 20 seconds to take one picture. Piece of crap! I can't wait to get an SLR, but not until after we buy our house...

I did just get a smiley pic after I posted this - not the greatest quality or lighting, but it's a start! See below! (And thanks to iphoto retouching so I could remove his name from his bib before posting!).

  • OMG toddle is so cute!  Yay Schmoodle!

And we have very few smiling pics of DS from that age -- he was fascinated by the camera and did not find it smile inducing. Even his pro pics from that age are all non-smiling. :( But a few months later it was much easier.

  • Basically I have 25-30 shots of every picture I take in order to try and get one with her smiling now.  Time consuming....but worth it when I catch one.  Thank goodness for digital cameras!
