comfort sucking-is it ok?

DS likes to comfort suck when he's done eating and to fall asleep. is that ok?

Re: comfort sucking-is it ok?

  • I think if you are alright with it, and it doesn't go on forever, that it's OK. I personally can't stand it, it's like nails on a chalk board to me if DS is sucking and not drinking. We are all business with feeding and if he needs to suck he gets his paci or finds his fingers.

  • If you are BFing (assuming you are) and you're o.k. with being his pacifier. Sure!
  • Why wouldn't it be ok?

My dd came out with a blister on her hand from sucking in utero. She likes to comfort suck and is very happy that she has learned how to suck her hands more consistently now that she's out of the womb.

  • Oh wait, do you mean comfort sucking on you?

I didn't do that - I introduced the pacifier early, like day two.

  • Do you mean comfort sucking at the breast, or in general (like on a paci or hands)?

I'm fine with it either way for my own LO, but I know some women don't like being a human paci.

But yes, comfort sucking isn't a bad thing! Anything your LO can do to self-soothe will serve them well in the future, IMO. Maybe not in all cases, but comfort sucking is harmless.

  • dd was using me as a pacifier, which was making bf harder, since she was making me really sore and cracked. We introduced a pacifier after 1 week so I was able to heal a little. And I didn't want her to suck her fingers or thumb. I was a thumb sucker and needed braces.

Plus taking away a binky is way easier than stopping a thumb sucker.?
