Someone on the parenting board made adorable monkey cupcakes. If you google monkey cake or monkey cupcakes, you should get several ideas. I'm planning to attempt this Curious George cake for my DS's 3rd birthday next month https://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/coolest-curious-george-cake-36.html
Oh I loved the cake I made for DS 1st bday last year. I bought the animal cake pan (makes dogs, pigs, cows) at Michaels, and cut off the ears and moved them to the side of the face - found the directions on the internet. Then I took an image of the monkey decor I was using and re-created the face. I'm so not an artist, I think it was so cute and I got tons of compliments!!! Good luck!!!
Re: if you did a monkey themed birthday party~
This isn't the best picture of it (angle is wrong), but you get the picture (LOL). It is probably more of a girly look than you're after though.

And re: decorations, I used a theme called "Mod Monkey" that I bought online at https://www.1stwishes.com/Mod-Monkey-1st-Birthday-Party-Supplies/43942/PartyKitDetail.aspx
