Babies: 0 - 3 Months

STTN and BF

I've  talked to so many whose babies are sleeping through the night at two months, however when I dig deeper I find out that they are FF. I am EBF and DS gets put down to bed around 10 or 11 but is up around 1 or 2am to feed. He then usually gets up every three hours from then. I'm just curious as to how many EBF's babies are STTN at two months, meaning they don't wake at all for a feeding?

Re: STTN and BF

  • Jacob goes to sleep at 9pm until 4am.  Though in the past couple days he's made it to 5 and 6am.  He's EBF.

  • DS started STTN at 8-9 wks and I EBF'd.  Prior to that he would wake every 4-5 hours or so, but gradually slept longer and longer. He'd go down at about 10pm and wake to eat at 4:30am, but would go back down for a few hours. By 3 months 3.5 months for sure he was STTN from 9pm-8am without waking to eat.   We now do formula (at 4 months we started), and he still STTN, from 8pm-7:30am.

  • I am EBF and DD started STTN at 2 months and has ever since.
  • I am EBFing and DD was sleeping 5 or 6 hours straight.  Now she's STTN 10 hours.

  • Our LO just started sleeping from about 8:30/9 to 5am...fingers crossed it continues.  But she is a BIG eater - she always overeats no matter how hard I try to stop it.  So I actually had to start to make her wait longer to eat so that she had time to digest the old food instead of spitting it back up.  Are you sure your LO is always hungry?  I realized that sometimes she just wanted to suck & the thumb/passifier helped her extend a little.  Of course my LO is also probably about 13 lbs by now too.  A smaller baby may just need to eat that often...

  • My LO started STTN right around 2 months and she is BF.
  • At 4.5 months, my ebf baby is still up many times at night.  I'm back to work now and mama's desperate for sleep.  Starting tonight, we're going to do a daddy-fed formula bottle at LO's first waking.  My hope is that he eventually will decide it's not worth waking up for a bottle of formula from daddy or the formula will help him sleep longer after that first stretch.  I can't give up our routine of nursing to sleep, esp since I'm now back at work and miss him like crazy during the day.  But, when he's up at 11:30 ... I'd rather continue sleeping and have daddy give him a formula bottle, especially since I know he'll be up again in 2.5 or so hours.  Ugh.  Mama's worn out!

Also, since I've been back to work, my pumping output is barely keeping up with LO.  We're about to the point of having to supplement with formula anyway, so I might as well do it with an overnight bottle.  My freezer stash is minimal so I don't have enough to pull from that for an overnight bottle of bm.

I'm not advocating this, as I know it will affect my supply.  I'm just sharing what I've decided is best for our family at the moment.

  • It may be that he is smaller. He is just about 11 and a half pounds. I heard somewhere that 12 Ibs is when it usually starts....
  • DD technically sleeps through the night, since she sleeps from 9pm to 4am. I don't wake up at 4am, so I don't really consider this sleeping through the night. She's been waking up at this time for a couple of weeks after gradually pushing back that feeding further out in about 30 minutes increments. I hope that she'll eventually have it pushed all the way back to 6am, which is when I get up. She has slept through the night (9am to 7:30am) once ever. It was awesome. She is EBF.

  • DS has STTN since he was 2 months, and he was 11lbs 4oz. I EBF.

I think he's just a good sleeper, since it's not like I did anything special to make that happen (I was fully expecting to not get any sleep for awhile after he was born). Some kids are, some aren't. I certainly wasn't.

  • Now I feel bad! What is wrong with my child? I wonder if it is my supply?
  • If you aren't opposed to the idea, a good trick is to pump during the day and feed a nice big bottle of EBM before bedtime.  I have to admit, my LO gets EBM all day and I FF him at bedtime and he sleeps 11-12 hours for me at 2 months!
  • I EP and so DD only receives BM bottles. She is still kind of hit or miss on sleeping....she is usually asleep by 9pm-9:30ish, but will many times wake up around 2:30-3am to eat.

However, the last few nights I have been giving her a 6 oz BM bottle (she usually only has 5 oz bottles throughout the day) right around 9:30pm and she has been sleeping until around 5:30am. Hopefully this pattern continues!

Will baby #3 be another girl?

  • My babies STTN or if they do wake up, I don't feed them.  They usually go 11 or so hours between feedings (from around 7 PM to 6 AM).  They eat about 33 oz during the day, 5 feedings of 5 1/2 oz.  I EP.  But we just dropped the 2 AM feeding about a week ago, so just over 3 months.

  • I feed DS at 10:30, he's asleep by 11:30 and usually doesn't wake up until 5 or 6 so far. I feed him every three hours during the day.
