***myrall***

Hey, so what did you decide on flooring? I've been trying to thumb through my most recent Dwell and keep thinking about you.

Re: ***myrall***

  • Hey! Thanks for asking!

The more and more I think about things (possible future remodels, etc.) the more the marmoleum looks good to me. I'll probably do it in a slate color or something similar.

We plan on knocking out a center wall at some point, and then the floor in one half of the house will have to be joined with the other side. I'd hate to do all that work on a wood floor and then have to come back in and fill in the blanks. Not to mention, the possibilty of being kicked out of our house for a day or so for the wood floors to be finished doesn't sound so fun.

I have several mid-century ranch books and I've been pouring through them for design inspiration. Since cork, slate and terrazzo are out of the question budget-wise, we can go for something that mimics it. I saw a really neat kitchen/family room redo that involved mixing different shades of vinyl tile. It looked soooo nice.

  • I sooo miss Atlanta. It was easier to find mid century modern homes than here in Houston. There's like ONE neighborhood here to choose from and it's in the hood with crappy schools. I'm dreading buying our cookie cutter house in suburbia but maybe one day we'll actually be able to buy something we REALLY want. I just want some land to build a green (strawbale, modern) house on without having to be crunched for time. And I want it to be in a great school district. Yes, I want the world. Ain't happenin :(

Post your remodel pics when you do it!

  • A dear friend of mine built a straw-bale house and lives completely off the grid. He has huge solar panels for the house and I think the only thing strung out to his property is a phone line. They're so hardcore, they even have a sawdust toilet (even though I think Chris relented and built a real plumbed bathroom for his three daughters).

  • OMG - I could NOT live without a plumbed bathroom. I stayed with someone for a couple of weeks in Santa Fe almost 20 years ago and what I remember most was that composting toilet. I hope things have changed at least a little bit since then b/c to go pee, we had to go find a spot in the woods. The toilet was only for #2 and you'd have to put a scoop of something or other in and give it a big turn. I got good at holding it until we made it into town that day and used public restrooms. Makes me want to throw up thinking about it again. Gray water for the toilets, yes. But WATER is a must for me. LOL
