Blood in baby's diaper??

I just found a little blood in my baby's diaper, does anyone know what could cause this? It looks like it probably came from her urine. My doctor's office doesn't open for another 1.5 hours but I am definitely going to call them. Just wondering until then if anyone ever encountered this?

  • wow i dont know. Def call asap. Maybe you could call your local ER

  • It could either be a milk protien allergy or an infection. Your pedi office doesn't have an after hours #?
  • Call the office ASAP and leave a message with the service.  You don't want to wait on this.

  • Somewhere I read that the most common reasons for blood in a diaper are bad diaper rash or a milk allergy.

Does your LO otherwise seem happy/healthy?  I don't know if I would rush to the ER if it were me, but I would definitely call the pedi.

However, if it looks like it came from the urine, it could be a bladder infection?  Any temp?

  • I would go to the ER ...
  • Please DON'T go to the ER.  It's most likely a bladder infection, but could also be a food allergy, neither of which is an emergency or life-threatening situation.

<sigh>  It's no wonder the health care system is such a mess if y'all are running to the ER at the drop of a hat.

    this.

  • We had the same thing happen at 4 mo right about the time we started solid foods.  We called in before we went to the dr and they told us to look and see if she had any cuts from a hard stool on her bottem and if we didn't see anything to come in.  It ended up being because we started food her urine was changing the diaper crystals a redish orange, so it wasn't blood at all.   The Dr told us if it was bladder infection you would continuly see blood and it wouldn't just be a speck it would be all over where she peed and it would not get better on its own.  Definately call your doc and I would recomend taking the diaper in because they can tell if its blood or just the diaper.

    this.

Considering that finding blood in my son's diaper and rushing medical care saved his life from an infection, I'd still say don't wait for medical care.  He was only a few days old at the time and that might have made the difference but I still wouldn't be so cavalier about just waiting around to call when the office opens. In his case, an hour would have been too long.
