Painful Gas/Pooping Question

What are some other things that can cause an infant to have excess gas and painful farts/poops besides food allergies?

My pedi feels that DS has a food sensitivity (probably to milk protein) and I have been on an elimination diet for weeks now with no dairy, wheat, egg, nuts, soy or shellfish. I've noticed a slight improvement in DS, but nothing to write home about. We seem to follow a pattern of eat, poop/spit up, scream, sleep, poop, scream.

You can imagine that I am pretty close to having a mental breakdown due to my restrictive diet and screaming child. :( Any thoughts of what might be the problem? TIA!

Re: Painful Gas/Pooping Question

  • Could be a 'lactose overload' - where there is an inbalance in foremilk/hindmilk.  Usually caused by an oversupply.  As an experiment I tried to pump 1oz or a little less, prior to feeding her and I saw an improvement in her - happier, slept better etc.   Now I'm trying to eliminate the pumping...

I'm in the same boat as you so if you have any answers PLEASE let me know :(

The diet did NOTHING for us exept make me miserable.

  • Someone on here earlier said that feeding them cold BM can cause gas.  I had never heard of that, but you never know....good luck!!

I tried block feeding last week and asked my pedi about this when I was in there. She told me that block feeding was for ppl who had so much milk that they could feed 3 babies. I had also noticed that my supply was going down and DS didn't seem to be satisfied. I asked if block feeding can cause a decrease in supply and she said yes. :(

Please feel free to PM me anytime if you just need someone to understand how frustrating it is. I've seen your other posts and completely understand how you feel.

I'll let ya know if I come up with any possible solutions as well!

  • We had this too.  After a lot of formula switching/breastfeeding and the very restrictive diet, my DD GI dr. told us that she was not getting the nutrients in the BM she was needing because of the restrictive diet.  I hated to do it, but I gave up the BF to make her feel better.  The screaming in pain was also do to reflux.  Does your LO have reflux?  We switched to another formula (alimentum) and was switched from zantac to prilosec and it has seemed to help so far.  (Keeping my fingers crossed).  Good luck.  I know your pain of screaming/eat/poop/sleep baby!! It is no fun and heartbreaking but the Dr keeps telling us she will grow out of it and it will get better.  Again, good luck and don't hesitate to PM me for support.  Wish I would have had more than just my DH (who was wonderful with all this!)
