Reflux mommies- Enfamil AR?

Has anyone tried using this formula instead of adding the rice cereal to the bottle? What are the good/bad points? Does it get stuck in the nipple as badly as the rice cereal does? Have you found it to be helpful with the spitting up? What about problems with constipation? Thanks!

Re: Reflux mommies- Enfamil AR?

  • We tried it for a couple weeks.  It does not get stuck in the nipple.  (Although we rarely find that rice cereal gets stuck in the nipple, either, if we let it dissolve for a few minutes after heating DS's bottles...)  The powder is HORRIBLE to mix, however, even with a Dr. Brown's formula pitcher.  It clumps extremely easily.  Using RTF would help with this, but I was not willing to pay that much for formula.

It did seem to help DS's spitting up, until one day DS spit up a walnut (in the shell walnut)-sized chunk of congealed rice starch, which caused him to gag and throw up nearly his whole bottle.  That was enough for me.  He didn't become constipated on it, but his poop went from pasty to fairly dry stools in one day.

We are now back to Similac Advance with Early Shield mixed with about 1/2 teaspoon rice cereal per ounce.  (DS's reflux isn't painful; we only wanted to thicken his formula a little to help keep it down, and this mixture works really well for us.)

  • We used this with level 1 nipples and did not have any issue - it does go down slower but DS had no issues.

For us it ended up not being right because part of DS' issue was also lactose/dairy issues. We ended up having to switch to nutragimen and adding rice cereal with y cut nipple - been a happy baby ever since.

  • We have used this formula. DS did not tolerate the rice cereal in the bottle very well unfortunately. I find that it mixes just as easily as any other formula and have never had any clumps. I use cold water and I think that might really help. We use a level 2 nipple and don't have any problems with it clogging the nipple. It does help with spit up and we have not had any constipation issues. HTH.

BTW--love your pic. :) We have two boxers. Love them!!

  • Its the ONLY formula that works for my LO! Goes thru a level 1 Dr. Browns & drop in slow easily. I will say at first it was hard to mix but now Enfamil has a "new look", I swear they changed something b/c its easier to mix! Get a little drink mixer, it works wonders! -->https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2792622 (sorry no clicky)
