Sippy cup at 4 mos??

My co worker told me that I should introduce DD to the sippy cup next month- that's when her kid started it and he was fine with it.  I don't think that's a good idea- I was thinking more like 9 months.

Re: Sippy cup at 4 mos??

  • I think I read once that you can give them one that early just to hold for the sake of becoming familiar with it as an object. Nevertheless, we tried giving Wes a straw one last week just to see what he would do with it, and he learned to use it in one day. Of course, it has not replaced his bottles! But we offer it to him while we sit at the table for practice.

  • yeah a friend told me this too .... I asked when her kids held their own bottles (as I am counting down the days to just that) she said .. "oh they went straight from bottles to cups at about 4 months" ...... Indifferent

then again I GUESS anything is possible .... Hmm

  • My pedi suggested having my LO experiment (mostly play with it and try to hold it) around 6 months.  We will have her actually "use it"around 9 months.

  • Well, the ages on the sippy cups do say 4 mths I think...so you can actually start them then. We haven't done it yet, but she has been trying very hard to hold her bottle lately, and she wants our cups all the time.  My MIL who watches her gave her a drop of water in a big red Silo cup to see if she would drink from it, and she did with no problem!  She seems to like it...so we'll probably give her the sippy cup to see how she does in the next month or two (not sure when yet).

  • I saw a cool Nuby one today that was a bottle, but it came with detachable handles and a no drip nipple. I was wondering when I should introduce something like this to LO too. Prob once he can hold his own bottle I will introduce it without anything in it

  • My DD can hold her own bottle fairly well & she already pushes my hands away when I'm holding it for her.  She's not consitent though & she usually ends up dropping it.  I did notice some sippy cups I got for my shower say 4 mos & up.  It seems a little young to me but I think I may just give it to her to play & practice with.

  • DS is 5 months.  He gets a sippy for water and when I try to get him formula.  He won't take a bottle, but will at least take a bit out of the sippy. I started around 4 months.
  • DD gets juice or water fairly regularly because of constipation and we started giving it to her in the sippy about a week or so ago and she does fine with it. She gets really excited when we bring it out.

We also have the Nuby bottle that a PP suggested and she does great with that as well.

  • I gave one to her tonight to start practicing with it. I put about 1/8 cup of water in it She did drink a little of it while I was making her cereal.

Also, I read when you give it to them in the beginning, remove the valves that make it spillproof. While they are learning with a few drops, it's too hard for them to get it out.
