Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Cereal amounts for LOs under 4 months?

We started DS on rice cereal on Friday due to his spitting up and generally eating a lot quite often (per pedi's recommendation.) Dr. didn't specify how much to give, so we've been doing 1 Tbsp per 4 oz bottle, and obviously that's pretty much nothing, but it has worked in keeping DS from spitting up and helps him go a little longer between meals. I was wondering how much cereal other parents of <4 month olds are using, as well as how often you give it (every bottle, bedtime, etc.)

I'm not planning on upping the amount unless DS shows signs he'd like more, but I'd just like to know about what's average for younger babies, since they aren't normally on solids yet. And how did you decide on that amount? And what do you use it for (reflux, spit up, big eaters) in case that makes a difference in amount??

Thanks! ?

  • I do one Tbsp per ounce in every bottle for all the reasons that you mention. We started off using rice cereal but it made LO very constipated. A mother in the playgroup I joined suggested switching to the infant oatmeal and it works like a charm.

I researched the appropriate amount to give the baby. When his Doctor suggested the cereal he also never told us an amount but 1 Tbsp per ounce seems to be the routine amount for infants.

Thanks. I might ask the doctor about the oatmeal since DS has terrible constipation anyway. He really doesn't need it getting worse because of cereal.?
