Sewers - how easy would this be to make?

Just curious.  Do you think a moderately accomplished sewer could pull it off?  I'm guessing it would need more sewing than just the blanket edge stitching (or whatever that is called), or do you think that would be sufficient?

  • Honestly, when I saw that, the first thing I thought was, even I could make that and for a lot cheaper.

I would *think* you'd only need some felt, some batting and then a needle with some thick thread and everything could be done by hand.

  • I'd charge three times that amount to make those.  The TIME and freaking detail required to cut them out would be obnoxious.

But, to answer your question, yes.  I totally think you could do it.  It would just be a huge PITA.

THIS.  Exactly.  They are SO cheap (they used to be more, and I've wanted them for my kids forever!).  The time you'd put into them would be a lot.  Tracing the letter onto felt, cutting out the letter, stitching the letter about 3/4 of the way and stuffing carefully and finishing the stitching.  Then gluing on a magnet or whatever if you wanted one.  Repeat 25 more times + any additional letters.  Definitely do-able, but you just have to decide if you want to invest the time :)

    Ditto.

Like this poster said, the First and biggest pain is tracing/cutting out all those letters.  Anytime I have to work on something small it is a huge PITA!!!  and then stuffing them and sewing them together without letting the batting leak out the sides, another Pain.  and I would think you'd def have to do it by hand, too small to use  a machine for.

But between the cost of materials and TIME taken to do this project, I think $18 is an awesome price!!!!

  • I agree - I don't think it's a bad price, it's more of an accomplishable project that I could do for DS - I kind of like small work.  Used to love cutting out model pieces for DH because of how anal I am, and have always kind of preferred hand sewing to machine - it just feels more authentic.  Maybe I'll give a letter a try, see how it goes and decide from there.  I agree, I don't know if I have the patience for the entire alphabet...  hmm....

this is exactly what I thought!

  • So easy, but SO MUCH OF A PAIN!  I would never make those and sell them bc they would drive me crazy!  Just cut some letters out of felt and attach velcro or magnet strips to the back.  IMO- all of the tracing, cutting, sewing, stuffing and top sticthing is not worth it! ;)

I'd start with the first letter of his name and call it an accomplishment if you finish the whole name.  The whole alphabet is insane.
