Chipped tooth

What an awful weekend, first thing Sat morning I noticed Jackson's front tooth is chipped on the bottom inside of the tooth. It's not too bad but I have no idea how he even did it, so I feel awful. You'd think something like chipping a tooth would be from a big fall but I didn't see him take any that bad. It feels a little rough and of course I see it every time I look at him now and feel so bad. It doesn't seem to bother him or affect his eating.

He has never been to a dentist but do you think in this occasion I should find a one?

Than just to add to the day we went to lunch and the waitress accidently spilled a cup of hot coffee on him....he was fine no bad burns just so reddness still but it was so so awful. He is a breath holder anyway when he gets mad/hurt so he fully passed out while we were pouring cool water over him, so terrible. I am ready for monday and to put this weekend behind us, my poor guy.

If anyone has any advice on the baby tooth, I would appreciate it!

  • OMG, that's horrible.

Kind of curious what the Waitress did/said about the coffee. I hope you got your order for free at the very least!

As for the tooth, I'd think that calling a Dentist office and asking for advice would be my first step.

  • Wow on the coffee, your poor baby!  I would have been so upset!

My son has chipped BOTH of his front teeth.  I have no idea how it happened either time, but I'm pretty sure I know what day he did the first one and nothing traumatic happened to him that day.   He has been to the pedi since and he said not to worry about it, and that they will naturally file down and become less noticeable over time.  I considered calling the dentist for cosmetic reasons but decided against it because there is no way he would sit still for the dentist to do anything.

I really hope your week gets better!

  • The waitress felt awful....we had to file a report and the gave us our food for free to go (J and I were sopping wet from all the cool water we had on and I was still decideing if we were going to go to the ER) We got the cool water on him so fast so it really helped. It was on his right side of his face, his chest and arm. He has one blister the rest is just red and much better today. My Dr. is going to see him tomorrow just to ease my mind I think. It was all just so stressful.

Since he held his breath (turned blue and passed out as well) everyone around us was freaking out also. so not fun.

  • Poor guy! DS chipped his tooth too. He barely seemed to notice. At first it seemed fine and our pedi said that we probably didn't need to see a dentist unless the chip got larger or discolored. DS was only 9 months old at the time and we didn't plan on the first dentist visit until 1 1/2 or 2. A few months ago I noticed that the chip had started getting larger, so we took him to a pediatric dentist. She recommended having it filled to prevent any cavitites or having the tooth fall out. He had it filled a few weeks ago and it went GREAT. The whole procedure took less than 10 minutes and it looks fantastic. So I would say that unless he seems to be in pain, the chip is growing and/or discoloring you are probably fine to wait until his next dentist appointment.

  • I would freak the eff out if someone poured hot coffee on my child, accident or not. And if it is blistered, it is a bad burn. That is really unfortunate.
  • I'm so glad that others have had a LO with a chipped tooth..thanks SO much for the advice!! I think we'll just watch it for now then.

Yes, he did pass out. He has done it a couple of times now. When he first held his breath for the first time I had no idea what was happening and we freaked out. Now we know he has breath holding spells but really it doesn't make it any easier I feel like I am waiting for it to happen every day. He was tested for anemia and seizures when it first started just to make sure it wasn't either. Some times he can go a few days without it happening and other days it will happen 2 or 3 times a day, he rarely passes out though. I guess 5% of babies do it and they grow out of it by the time they are 5, if I can make it till them.

We did freak out about the coffee spill big time.....I am just slightly calmed down now and I am not one to file a lawsuit since he is ok. It was so awful but I imagine if I was the waitress I would have nightmares about it for a long time. I don't think we'll ever order coffee when we go out ever again, it also makes you think where you place the high chair.
