Pinking shears question

For those that use them - are they really really tough to use? I have a pair of Fiskars that I use pretty frequently but they used to be my moms and there's a good chance that they are 20+ years old. I just clipped the rounded edges on 16 soakers and my wrist feels like I just finished hand writing a 10 page report. I'm just wondering if a new pair should be my next purchase or if they're just harder to manipulate because they're not a single nice blade.

Re: Pinking shears question

  • Cutting a rounded edge would definitely be harder than a straight edge... but mine are SUPER slick to cut with (easier than if I were to cut fabric with say... my regular office scissors).  I would invest in a new pair... or ask for some for Christmas... I wasn't willing to spend so much on a pair of scissors, so my MIL bought them for me two years ago.

  • Try oiling the hinge w/ sewing machine oil and letting them sit for a couple days, occasionally doing cutting motions with them.

  • Can you tell whether the blades are dull, or the hinge is angry? I like Jenni's suggestion if you thing it's the hinge. The ones I'm most accustomed to using do seem somehow bulkier than my regular shears, but they shouldn't hurt to use.
