how much to freeze?

I am starting to build a stash in anticipation of going for surgery in the next few months. I got the freezer bags & I am wondering how much I should put in each bag, I am guessing 3 or 4 oz?  He currently takes 2 & 1/2-3 oz when we give EBM by bottle, I get 3-6 oz when I pump.

Re: how much to freeze?

  • I read in one book to freeze in smaller increments so you don't waste milk - so like 2 ozs.  But then I read in another to freeze in mixed amounts -- sometimes 2 ozs, sometimes 3 etc so you can have a variety.  At this point I pump into two bottles, one from each side, and from each pumping session I just freeze what I get.  I figure by the time DD is using the milk we'll have a decent idea of what she needs in a day and can defrost an approriate amount.  At least I hope so.

  • I was told it was a good idea to freeze my bm in an ice tray (each cube is approx 1oz).  Having 1 oz cubes makes it easy to measure and thaw.  Of course, I am not pumping enough to freeze anything yet.

  • I just freeze whatever I am able to pump (in bags). So I have a variety of amounts. If I defrost 6oz and he only needs 4 then the other 2 can be used in another feeding. That is kind of how I am approaching it.
  • I usually freeze in 3 or 4 oz.
