Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

my DD doesn't say Mama......

She babbles CONSTANTLY, and can say many words.....she has said Dada forever, and for awhile would call me Dada when I would leave/come home (just like Dada) Her latest word is Papa...and she calls me, and everyone else (including strangers, mostly men) that. It's not like I've never heard her say Mama (few times, when crying :( but she really doesn't "call" me Mom/mommy whatever.....anyone else?

Re: my DD doesn't say Mama......

  • Awwww, my DS started saying 'mama' at 8 months. When he was upset he would crawl to me saying 'mama' over and over again. She'll say it soon and it'll be the sweetest thing you've ever heard!

  • Madi only says mum mum mum when she is upset and wants me, or if she is eating and I am taking to long to bring her dinner to the table.

    Sigh!

But she only started this recently.

  • Someone told me it's because we say things like "There's Dada!" to them when DH walks in, and DH doesn't say "Mama" to them when we walk in.

If all else fails,  blame DH. :-)

  • She said mama a few times around her birthday but really started around 13m to associate mama with me. Now everything is mama and papa is dada and 'appen is for "what happen?" Don't stress. I was stress out since everyone in my family was telling me that x, y, and z spoke like at 3m. Now every day she learns something new ('asta for pasta, macy's for...well...macy's! LOL)
  • Dont worry. My DS said Mama for the first time around 9 months but didnt start using it for me until this week!! He only uses it when he's upset or looking for me, if I am in the bathroom or something! He says a lot of other things, Hi Daddy, Papa, Nana, gain (for again), baby, Lola (our dogs name for pete's sake), and others. It was a little frustrating, but they just do things when they are ready!

I concur.  I always say "Where's Dada?" and "Dada's home!" and "It's Dada! on the phone!"  now he walks around on the play phone saying dadad dada dadaa.  I have never once heard a Mama from him.  He says kitty and makes fake snoring sounds (hilarious) but won't say mama.  :(
