Drowsy but awake?

If u put your child to be drowsy but awake, how do u do it? One of my girls almost always falls asleep during her night bottle, then I slip her in her crib and she's up on and off all nite. I decided to try putting her to bed awake last night and she screamed for an hour. I put on her noise machine, mobile, etc. Any tips? Thanks
