NTR: Our first big car repair bill...

And I feel like I'm going to hurl.  $1800...and that is probably at least partially due to me waiting too long to take it in after I realized something might be wrong.  I feel really sick, but we don't have a choiceIck! + Crying + Embarrassed = me.

Thanks for letting me vent...

  • I'm sorry! What is wrong with it?

  • *hugs* If it makes you feel any better I did $2,500 worth of damage to my car when I hit my own garage.
  • I have, on occasion, the tendency to run over curbs.  I am assuming that it was one of these incidents (or a combination of them) that led to a hub on one of the wheels being bent.  I didn't notice a problem until I started getting vibration in the steering column when I hit the brakes...and I waited WAY too long (read: months) to get it checked out -- it was pretty minor at first, but started to get worse in the past couple of weeks.  Apparently by that point, the hub had messed up a rotor...and the rotors need to match, so we had to replace 2...and the brake pads need to fit the rotors properly...and the alignment had to be re-done after that.  Add on a regular maintenace service/oil change, and there you go.

I don't have much of a sense of what kind of premium the dealer charges, but we don't have any other mechanic, so I was afraid to say "no, we want to get another estimate."  I'm such a wuss when it comes to the car, b/c I know little to nothing about it (I know, I know, that's bad).  F***bunnies.

Oww -- that sucks.  I feel like I'm going to burst into tears at my desk...DH must be so mad at me even though he didn't show it when I called to let him know...he has a right to be.  I just keep thinking that this could have been so much less expensive had I taken it in as soon as I first felt the vibration.  Plus, was the car really safe for DD in the meantime????  I can't worry about it now, but I feel like a big sack of crap.

  • This might make you feel better.

I ummm...forgot to get my oil changed for about 2 years (oops) and 1 month later my car is STILL in the shop. I think we are at close to 3k from them trying to save the engine. Hopefully I will get my car back in the next 2 weeks.

Yikes.  I'm so sorry.  I just keep thinking about how, at least in our case, the darn thing isn't even paid off.  I hope you get your car back soon!
