<3 MIL, hate her "Wrong-isms"

These are the things that MIL says that are just--wrong!  She is British-Guyanese, so I know that some of this is just part of her dialect, but some of it just doesn't make any sense.  For example, the word is "SANDWICH" not "SANG-wich." Ugh!  DH slips up and says it too (although he is American born and really doesn't have these slip ups that often).

She calls the carseat a "chair."  It is not a chair.  It is a seat. It's a car seat The passenger's seat in the car is not a chair. It's the passenger's seat.  The driver's seat is not the "driver's chair."  Her car seat is a car seat. It's just not a chair!  Sorry...

Finally, instead of saying that DD pooped or made a stink or whatever NORMAL people say, she says "She made."  Made what?  And it's consistent. "Is she making?" "Did she make?" That is not a term!  That is something she made up.  It's just annoying.

And you know I will bust a blood vessel if DD picks this "language" up.

  • lol my dad says Sangwhich too as well as ogion and most annoyingly - Massatusetts (he thinks it should be pronounced that way so does it wrong on purpose)  He's American born as well and has no excuse and refuses to pronounce them correctly.

What is that about?  My mom's no better, she refuses to pronounce the words "ancient" and "tavern" correctly.  Anxient (like ank-shent) and Tare-vern.  No idea why.  Oh I almost forgot "Hormones" = "Harmones"

"Ooh, mommy, I'm gonna MAKE one!"  LOL - that would crack me up.

I know what you mean; I live in fear of DD picking up her grandma's West Texanisms.  No that there's anything wrong with West Texas, it's just, you write with a "pen" not a "pin," and count to "ten" not to "tin" or "ti-yen."

Oh yeah!  My niece was born in Philadelphia, but basically learned to talk in Augusta, GA where they live now.  Hotel?  "Ho-tay-el"  Although, it is kinda cute...

  • lol...my best friend in college was american born, but her parents were Indian.  She would always refer to "giving an exam." As in "are you ready to give the exam tomorrow?"  Look, if you are the one in the seat with the pencil, then you are "taking" the exam.
