Multiples

?? for multiple mommas

Really it is just out of curiosity...

A friend of mine has a friend who is pg with twins.  My friend said she is roughly 18 weeks, but the babies are measuring at 24 weeks.  I told her that didn't seem right to me, and SHE was probably measuring at 24 weeks.  She still stood by what she said, and said the babies are huge b/c the parents are tall.

Often my friend misunderstands people and doesn't really know the story, but I was curious if this is "possible" that the babies are really measuring ahead since there are 2 of them.

Thanks ladies

Re: ?? for multiple mommas

  • chances are that her fundal height is 24w... not the babies measuring 24w... though, some people just have large babies and they COULD be measuring bigger... but that's a HUGE difference- so my guess is it's the fundal height.

Just b/c there are 2 in there doesn't mean they will be smaller than the avg baby... my boys were 6lb 6oz and .4oz shy of 8lbs - 2 weeks early... so she could have big twins.

  • There's always the chance that she is having big babies but the twin mom is probably referring to the fundal height and your friend misunderstood her.  Tall or not, I don't think 15 week fetuses are going to be super huge.

  • I'm with the pp, it is probably the fundal height. Did she have an ultrasound to tell her what they were measuring? Thats the only way to really tell and that can be off by 2 lbs I think. Multiples grow at the same rate as a singleton until late in the 3rd trimester when there is little room. My guess is that she misunderstood what her fundal height means.

  • At most u/s they give you the baby's size in weight, not weeks gestation, so I'm assuming it's her uterus that's measuring ahead.

  • Yeah, I would guess fundal height too.

  • I agree with PPs.  My girls did not start measuring ahead until 32 weeks along.  They were born at 34 week weighing 6lbs each.
  • I'd bet she misunderstood and it's the fundal height.  DS was always measuring 3 weeks ahead, and the docs were always blown away at how big he was... I cannot imagine that a full 6 weeks ahead is even possible.
  • Agree w/ PPs. I'm 8 weeks and was measuring at 10. DH and I are average size people so I'm not expecting giant twins just two normal size babies. ;)
