$1000 lady... DFCS?

If you knew her would you call them?

and go..

Re: $1000 lady... DFCS?

  • Tragically, while they probably wouldn't return children to that environment if they had already been taken away, it probably doesn't rise to the level they would remove them for.

Although the fact that their mother is a raving whackjob might tip a scale.

  • She is not abusing them in the literal sense of the word, she is just royally screwing them up.  And there is no way that her apartment is bug and rodent free.  I didn't see Raid on her Wal-Mart list, and Lord knows those plastic bins have been there, unmoved or dusted, since they moved in.
  • Why? Her kids are warm, dry, fed, clothed, have somewhere to sleep (even if a mattress on the floor isn't your idea of luxury bedding). She speaks of them with affection and there is no indication that they are abused or neglected.

Do I think her apartment could be more clean? Yes. Do I think her kids should be taken away from her? No.

I think most people who have responded to these posts live in a fantasty world and they're nicely insulated by their large monthly budgets. I admire what she's done and the fact that she does budget her money (as little as it is) and that she's conscious of what they can/can't afford.

How would YOU live on $1000? What would you do differently? The obvious answer is not have more kids, but that's her choice as long as she can provide for them too.

  • No, I wouldn't. It is strange, odd, and a wreck to watch, but I don't see any abuse here. Now, if there were 5 kids living in that tiny room, under the crib, etc. then possibly. BFF had her 3 kids taken away because she had no power in the house for a month and she is the worlds filthiest housekeeper. She got them back and has another child now. The 1K lady is not nearly as bad.

Bingo.  She's doing her best -- maybe not making all of the best choices, but she's trying, and her children are fed, clothed and loved.

  • I have reported people before, this lady doesn't come close to them, so no,

  • Of course not. I think her blog was kind of funny to read, but from the limited information I have about her, she's not abusing her kids. They're poor, it doesn't make them monsters.

No, of course not. But seriously, doesn't she sound a little off. Kind of like a hoarder, maybe in reverse?

  • No, not at all, but I have a feeling that someone will (if they haven't already) report her just because so much crap was said about it yesterday.

Is she making the best choices for her children?  Maybe not.  Is she harming them, withholding food, not bathing them or providing adequate shelter for them?  No.  It seems like she loves her children and is doing what she thinks is best for them even if it isn't aligned with what the general population thinks is best for their children.

Yes, I think she's kind of a weirdo, and doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. That's why I thought it was kind of funny :)

  • yes. i think she is slowly killing her children by feeding them lard, hotdogs, and stevia. i think that she puts them in danger by having 1 sleep UNDER the crib. i think something is actually wrong with her. she CHOOSES to do these things for a *blog* not bc she needs to. she doesn't take food stamps when she could actually buy HEALTHY food for her children, she doesn't fvcking clean her house... at all... it has zero to do with being poor. lots of people are poor and their children still are healthy - her children are likely not. yet, no one would know as they don't want to waste money going to the dr, right?
  • I loved the "corn is genetically modified to come drag your children from their beds" rant, followed by the picture of the healthy cheap-a$$ hot dogs they eat.

I guarantee you, Bar S hot dogs contain corn. Probably genetically modified. Possibly on Mars.

  • well and she knows she doesn't actually feed them cheese but something "cheese-like" or however she put it.

I really wanted to hear more about this. She hinted that she believes that corn is involved in some kind of plot for world domination, which sounds absolutely fascinating to me. I wish she had elaborated :(

  • Yeah, and that cheese-like substances goes on everything.

I'm sorry. Knock-off Kraft singles on bread baked in a crock-pot as part of your anti-oven social experiment does not a pizza make.

and ask rach! she said she LOVES all the questions.

  • No.  That blog truly depressed me, but she is not harming her children to the point where foster care would be better.  Their diet sucks, it's scary that they have neither life nor dental insurance, and yes, her apartment could be cleaner.....but this does not constitute abuse or neglect.

And her toddler is not sleeping UNDER the crib - that's just where the bed is stored during the day.  Definition of a trundle bed.

yes it is neglect. if children are being taken away from their parents bc they are 500lbs - then children should be taken away bc they live on nitrates and lard. and bad teeth = heart problems later.

eta: and there is still a child in a rubbermaid box btw.

Thank you SO much for that clarification! I have been scratching my head all day trying to figure out how that worked. Seriously! That was the most disturbing part of everything for me. I just didn't get it. LOL

  • can you link that toledo? sorry, i can't find it again.

I agree, but I also think she's not quite right.  And if I were a close family member or friend I would be watching for signs to make sure she doesn't get to a point where she is endangering her children.  And if she started to exhibit signs of mental illness, I would step in at that point.

LOL, I agree that THAT was a truly disturbing idea.  I guess corn will kill your kid, but SIDS magically won't.  Indifferent

Well, actually a trundle bed is a bed that fits under another bed. Not just a spare crib mattress that gets jammed under there during the day because there's no room to walk around in the 8x6 lean-to you keep your kids in at night.

Yeah, I get that it's a horrible idea.  I'm just correcting the oft-repeated falsehood about this woman that she is having her toddler sleep UNDER a crib.  It shows that people don't really get what "trundle" means.

yeah, and there isn't really a kid in a rubbermaid bin.  she's just thought about it.

I think this is hilarious - my DH absolutely hates corn with the heat of eleventy billion fiery suns so he would probably agree with her.  ;)

I think it's so weird that she allegedly comes from a wealthy, educated family, and yet this is what she's doing.

  • I think that it is horrible that she is purposefully having more children when she can't provide for the ones she has now. She could get food stamps and feed them better. She could qualify for government assistance but she doesn't even try. She could but she won't because this seems like it is some kind of game to her. Sadly, I still don't think her kids would get taken permanently from her, but maybe a little scare is all she needs to start providing for them better.

Nah, I think it would only justify her paranoid, delusional New World Order fantasies.
