Sizing for kids shoes

Kids shoes are perpelxing me lately. DS needs to wear shoes at daycare once he starts crawling.  How does sizing go for infant shoes.  I have seem some that are marked by months but other brands don't seem to have a months sizing.  What brand of shoes do you recommend?  I don't want to spend a ton of money on them right now since we will just use them at daycare but we do need to get a few pairs.  Also, once he does start walking I know it's better for them to not use shoes but again at daycare he will need to wear shoes. Any brand recommendations for shoes for walking?

Re: Sizing for kids shoes

  • Honestly, I never figured out the sizing.  I just tried shoes on DS until I found some that seemed to fit.  His first shoes were similar to these, but not sandals (they're no longer making them, so I can't find a link):

They were mostly leather on the bottom with a bit of rubber--just enough to keep him from slipping.  I got them for him when he was cruising.

A lot of people like Robeez for pre-walkers or cruisers.  Friends of mine used Target's version of those too:

Once your DS starts walking, I'd see if you can find a Stride Rite or Pedipeds outlet around you.  That way you can get him sized and get a good pair of shoes for him.  We did that with DS's second pair of sandals this summer and it was a good experience.

  • Under a year I just used socks or something like Robeez since she wasn't walking.  Check out ebay, they sometimes have things a little cheaper than the store full price.  Stride Rite also has some pre-walker shoes and depending on the style they are a little cheaper.
  • I recommend getting sized at Stride Rite and looking at Stride Rites or Robeez.  Robeez are soft and flexible for indoors.  Stride Rite has different styles (aka 'technologies') for the different stages of walking.  That is 'Soft Motion' for the crawler/early stages, then 'Sensory Response Technology,' etc - the earliest stages have the softest/most flexible soles on up.  We just got size 4 SRT Stride Rites for DD who is starting daycare at 12 months.

  • Thanks so much for the information. I guess we will be heading to Stride Rite this weekend. I do have a pair of robeez but they don't fit DS yet.

  • I'm having similar shoe woes.  DD is standing by herself now (for short periods of time) and, she has really big feet.

I think I'm going to go to stride rite this weekend and splurge on a pair!

  • Ditto getting measured at Stride Rite.  The outlet in Potomac Mills has good prices, and people who know how to measure kids' feet.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • I was at the Stride Rite outlet at Potomac Mills today. They had Robeez on sale for $9.99!
