Jewish burial question

Is it true that you have to bury the dead before the sunset the following day?  I mean, is it tradition?

Re: Jewish burial question

  • Most jewish burials occur 24-48 hours after death. but not on the day of sabbath.

This is to return the body to earth as soon as possible and by shortening the bereavement process for the family. hth's

  • Ditto pp.  Burials also do not occur on the Jewish high holidays such as Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.  Shiva lasts for 7 days and again, if it falls on a high holiday, it is cut short.
