Babies: 0 - 3 Months

6 week old and the TV

So When I am holding DD on my lap on the couch or if I put her in her swing she always turns her head towards the TV like she is watching it. I know at this age she can not see that far to really watch it, but should I stop her from trying to look at it? I know some people who at the age do not let there baby even near the TV. Am I a bad mom if she is in her swing and looking up at the TV while it is on?

Re: 6 week old and the TV

  • IMO, I don't think it's too bad right now. All she sees are bold colors and flashes of lights. She may enjoy that. But I do know that when they get older and can start seeing visual images you may wanna watch what you're watching.

  • No, but you are a bad mom if you did what I did yesterday, which was plop DD on the floor on her boppy, realize DD was fascinated by "Gangland" and proceed to lay with her on the floor for an hour watching "Gangland." 6 weeks is around the time DD started really noticing more things around her, esp the colors on movements on the tv. I don't imagine it would hurt them, unless they were right up in front of it. But as previously said, I am a bad mom.

  • My DD loves to look at it too, I think it's ok.

  • She's so little, its not like she's actually interested in watching tv yet - but the sounds/colors are probably interesting to her.. I'd let her watch!

  • I wouldn't worry about it - but, I'll let you know in a couple of years, so I can see if excessive TV watching has any lasting effects on DD#1:)
  • I know some people will disagree with TV for their LO's, but I allow my DD to watch Blues Clues in the morning while I'm getting ready, and I don't think I'm a bad mom. She loves it, and it gives me a little time to put some make-up on! At least she's not sitting watching some mindless crap, they actually try to teach kids things on that cartoon.

Do what you feel is right for you.

  • My DD likes to look at the TV also.  I think that she just likes the lights right now.  I wouldn't worry about it.
