caffiene question

I have not had any caffiene since before we started ttcing.  lately I havebeen so tired & unmotivated, feel like some cafffiene would be sooo nice but am afraid it will majorly affect my DD.  She is very calm and easy going and fusses rarely.

Does anyone drink caffiene and it not affect your LO?  How does it affect your LO?  I am not a coffee drinker but so soda would be nice.

Re: caffiene question

  • I am a huge coffee drinker.  I talked to the LC in the hospital and should told me not to stress to much about it.  I have two cups of coffee a day and sometimes I'll a third cup in the evening if I'm really tired.  It honestly doesn't affect my LO at all.  He is a good sleeper and not gassy.  Soda has a lot less caffeine so I don't think it would be a big deal to have one now and then.  I also think that kellymom has some info about caffeine.

  • At the hospital the LC told me no more then 2 caffeine drinks a day. On workday mornings, I pump at 9am and then drink a moutain dew, so its a little more out of my system by my noon pump. I drank caffeine in low amounts during my pregnancy, so DD is used to some. It may affect your LO more, since they've never been exposed to any, so I would start out with maybe one soda (and not a mountain dew) and see how it goes.

  • I'd say try it and you'll know if it affects your LO.  I rarely drink any coffee (and I don't drink soda) and I don't notice a difference in ds when I do have some.

  • I gave it up while ttc and did not drink any while pregnant.   I have had at least one soda or coffee a day since having her (in fact, I had dh get me a diet coke shortly after delivery) and it does not seem to bother her.

  • I started drinking caffeine in the hospital after having DS and I have never noticed it affecting him in any way.
  • I have a cup of coffee every morning and it has no effect on DS. This is the page on caffeine and breast milk form kellymom:

Basically it says it's safe in moderate amounts and shouldn't effect LO.

  • I gave it up for a couple weeks and slowly reintroduced small amounts to make sure it wasn't affecting LO.  Since you haven't been drinking it for so long, I think you'd know immediately if it was going to be an issue!

  • I didnt drink it for a while because one time after I had cofee LO wouldnt sleep.  Since then I have had it periodically and he seems unaffected by it.  Maybe the first time he was just having an off day because we sure have those.... Stick out tongue
