Breastfeeding

If you are BFing your 2nd+ DC, and you have a PIS...

Did you replace all the pump parts b/w kids?  And did you replace with all BPA-free this time (if it wasn't the first time)?

I have the Medela Pump In Style, and all the parts.  I had thought I would just sterilize all the parts for baby #2, but is that a no-no?  Are you supposed to replace all parts?  And, I don't know if BPA-free is important if we don't store BM in the bottles or feed from those bottles?  What I mean is, I only plan to use the pump occasionally, and just to pump the milk, then store in bags in the freezer.  Of course I want to do what's best, but replacing all those parts with BPA-free will be expensive, and I'm not sure if going BPA-free is so important for that.  Sure, if we were planning to bottle feed a lot, and warm milk in the bottles, and such, but we won't.

I'm afraid this sounds bad -- like I don't want to spend the extra $$ for the health of my baby!  Of course I will if it makes a difference.  I just don't know if it really does considering the limited use our pump parts will get.

  • I don't know the answer to your question since this is still my first... But I was just looking at getting a second set of parts to keep in my office and you can get a whole new set of PIS parts at addalittlelove.com for $34.50. Pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things, just for peace of mind. But the choice is up to you. If DC#1 is only a year or so old, I'm sure it's probably fine just to sterilize.

  • No, I didn't replace any of the Medela parts because they were already BPA-free.  I did purchase new bottles though because I used Avent bottles previously and those weren't BPA-free.

Thanks!  I will check that out.  I thought it would be much more expensive having to buy all the parts individually (and we had two sets of everything, for convenience).  But $35 is no big deal.

  • I replaced all of my  parts, but I had exclusively pumped with DD1 so my parts were worn out.  I wouldn't have otherwise and since DD2 is successfully BFing I won't next time.  I believe I read somewhere that medela has always been BPA free.

See--that's what I wonder about.  Printing "BPA-free" on stuff now is kind of a marketing ploy.  I have even seen stuff labeled BPA free that isn't made of plastic!  So I wondered if the Medela stuff is NOW BPA-free, or if they are just now putting a prominent "BPA-free" label on their stuff.  I'll have to research a bit, it looks like...
