I don't have a bag here to actually check the KIND of fish they use, but if memory serves, I thought it was a well-known whitefish, which are low in mercury. I get how the breading isn't so healthy, but what's the big stink (so to speak) about regular ol' fish sticks? I remember a post about this yesterday or the day before, and I meant to ask then.. forgot..
Re: What's so wrong with fish sticks?
I have fed them to ash a couple times...
I eat them too when she does, we will see responses
Some fish sticks are made with less than ideal pieces of fish. I think they just taste gross regardless.
We just don't eat fish, so we don't have fish sticks. I have nothing against them.

This piqued my curiosity so I googled. Here are the ingredients and nutritional facts for Gorton's fish sticks (presumably they're your standard run of the mill type of fish stick?):

After the post the other night, I went to my freezer to check it out. So as we all know, it is minced fish and obviously not prime cuts. Big whoop. Some breading also has MSG so that could be an issue for you.
If you don't like them for the taste, I get it. But we actually like them now and then. It is a comfort food thing. We always got them with mac and cheese when we were kids. And if helps convince my DS to eat some protein, fish even, then so be it.
It's funny that you started this thread. On a whim after getting stuck in traffic after work for two hours on my way to daycare, I decided to take DS for his first happy meal. I was thinking of all of the "Fishstick Fans" tonight as I was shoving my big and tasty down my throat and watching DS thoroughly enjoy dipping his nuggets into way too much BBQ sauce.
Everything in Moderation.
shannm - that is hilarious! you earned that Big n Tasty! Us mommas work hard and sometimes comfort junk food is what we need!
I remember fish sticks as a MAJOR comfort food as a kid too. I got those Ians brand for DS, so we'll see.
really? because i try to feed DS a lot of stuff i wouldn't eat--beets, squash, ham to name a few. i don't want him to grow up picky.
Exactly. I was actually laughing at that thread the other day. I mean it's fish sticks. I completely understand if you don't like them, so you don't buy them, and therefore don't give them to your LO. However, we actually happen to like them ourselves, and the first time I gave them to DS, he loved them as well. I, too, try to feed DS primarily healthy foods, always making sure he has fruits and vegetables, etc. It's not like he has fish sticks every other day, but sure he has them!
I was raised this way ^ to eat what I was given and to try and eat everything, but I was not raised in a picky family, so maybe that's why I will eat anything. Well, except milk. But I love cheese....
MIL's pickiness drives me effing insane. When we get pizza, it can only be canadian bacon. nothing else. She'll ask us what kind we want, and when we tell her she says "mmmm no we can't get that" and after going through all the options, its just canadian bacon. I can't even talk her into getting pineapple on it. :huff:
She eats plenty of fish- salmon, tilapia, flounder, so I don't think missing out on fish sticks will make her picky.
What parts of a FISH are choice parts LOL??? They don't even have that many parts!!! DH is from the Caribbean, and we eat lots of whole fish in my house. The guts are taken out before it is cooked, and the rest is eaten (after it is scaled of course). It is DELISH!
Fish is Fish as the children's book says. If you are against fried bredding, get the baked kind and call it a day. I am sure cow's milk has more effed up crap in it from the sick cows we raise and get if from then the fish in fish sticks.
Making your own is really easy.
Ian's brand also makes some healthier fish sticks.
?
AMEN! (and I'm not religious!)?
?
LMAO
I like them. With ketchup. Yuuuuum!
I haven't given them to DS yet.
