Breastfeeding

Back to work

I went back to work on Tuesday :(

You guys are such an incredible source of tips and advice.  I just want to thank you and say I don't know what people did before this.

 1. How long, each session, should I pump at work? I work from 8-3. I pump every 2 hours for 10 minutes because that is when my son is eating.

 2. My son eats 5 oz at each feeding and I am not getting enough. Is there anything I can do to get more.  I usually have about 15 ounces and I am supplementing with 5 ounces of formula.

3.  After I pump I refrigerate  the milk I have in one bottle. Can I mix the cold milk with warm milk or do I have keep them in seperate bottles in my fridge at work.

 Thanks again.

Re: Back to work

  • I pump in the a.m. after he nurses on the opposite side. I also have to pump at night. So I pump 6x to get enough for 4 feedings, and often that isnt  enough so I pump on the weekends too.

    GL, pumping is hard work.

p.s. keep them separate until they are the same temp.

  • I pump for 9-10 minutes at each session, until I'm not longer getting milk.  I am away from my son from 7:30-4 and he only eats one bottle while I'm gone (and he also gets brought to me to nurse one time...so he eats 2 times in 7.5 hours-I feed him at 7:00 and 4 o'clock then too).  I wasn't at work when my ds was as young as your LO, but he just started taking 5 oz at like 5+ months.  Are you sure he's needing 5 oz every two hours? I'm certainly not an expert and every baby is different, but here's a helpful website you may want to check out.

I've eaten oatmeal, drink plenty of water, taken More Milk Plus, pumped more often (I have to pump at night most nights to make sure I can keep my supply and freezer stash up) to keep my supply up. Make sure you're eating enough, I've heard brewer's yeast can help.

Milk should be the same temp to combine.  Good luck!
