Follow-up to Paypal scam...confused.

So I posted yesterday that I am selling a phone on Craigslist and someone emalied me asking for my email so they could send me payment via Paypal. The general consensus was that this was legit and many of you said you have accepted payment via Paypal from Craiglist.

So, I wrote the guy back and told him I don't use Paypal much, and I prefer cash. He replies to me and says that he is out of the country and wants the phone shipped to him and he will give me $250 for it (I'm asking $150 for it). And he will be back in Texas in December and gave me an international phone number in case I want to call him to discuss. Again, he says he will pay me via Paypal.

This screams scam to me, but I don't get it..how can it be a scam if it is payment via Paypal? Also, I have never used Paypal to accept payment....how would I even get access to the money? (Not that I plan on doing it, but I am confused).

Does this offer make sense to you? How could it be a scam? But at the same time, I doubt it is legit, either.

Thoughts?

  • Being that he is willing to pay you more than you asked for tells me its a scam.  Is he asking you to ship it internationally?  I would say thanks but no thanks and re-list it.

    this

  • yeah, the out of the country business and paying you more screams scam...weird though....its not like he's asking you to send the extra money back...
  • We had an incident with a paypal scam yesterday as well. I sold dd's Tom Arma Halloween Costume and as soon as it sold I got an email stating that I needed to verify my account and password. I was doing it and my dh (IT man) stopped me. He wrote and forwarded it to paypal and they said it was a fishing scam. I really couldn't believe it because the timing was perfect. I wouldn't do it!

  • I agree...the paying extra and shipping out of the country are the BIG red flags. I don't plan on doing it, but at the same time, I am really confused as to how this "scam" would work...bc I thought Paypal was relatively safe.

I thought maybe someone here might have some insight as to how it works. I don't plan on taking him up on his offer, yet curiosity is still getting the best of me....at least in the just wondering what he is up to, sense.

  • Ha! You guys are awesome. Thank you for playing detective for me. I love how I find it easier to post things here than to research myself half the time.

I just sent him this reply (I could not help myself).

    HI Ken,

Thank so much. That would be great! You can send payment via Paypal to my email: BigSucker@gmail.com. I will await the confirmation email from "Paypal" asking for my information so that you can steal my identity. Awesome.
Ps...can you  make it $350? I am really broke right now.

Good idea. I just forwarded the email to paypal as well.

    Thanks, guys!

  • From what I understand, they use stolen Paypal accounts or Paypal accounts open with stolen cc's.  Definitely a scam.  I received several of those when i sold my camera, and 2 more when we were selling an itouch.  They're all the same.  Anything dealing with "out of the country" buyers is a well-known scam.
  • If it is a scam, paypal will not fight in your defense! My SIL got screwed when she bought a FAKE iTouch off of eBay. Paypal did absolutely nothing.
  • HUGE RED FLAG!  Don't do it. This cannot be legit.   Any time they talk about being "out of the country" run, don't walk, away from the transaction.  SCAM No
