OK so I broke down after all this talk and called my old Infectious Diseases doc. I have been PNR with him for over a year but figured he would be the guy to talk to about this H1N1 thing.
As of August of 2009, they ARE NOT planning to vaccinate anyone between the ages of 0-6mo. So that makes the decision for everyone worried about vaccinating a newborn. The vaccine will not be available in wide distribution until mid-October.
As of now, the focus group that they will offer the vaccine to 1st is:
pregnant women
anyone age 6mo-24years
anyone with a compromised immune/high risk including cardio pulminary
elderly
The doc also said he is PLANNING to recommend it to his patients but will not make a final decision on that until after the rest of the trials are back and he has had time to go over the studies.
So that answered a few questions for me, hopefully it answers a few little ones for some other people too...especially those wondering about newborns-since apparently they will not vaccinate anyone under 6 mo.
Re: Tired of H1N1 and have some answers
It makes me laugh when information is so conflicting...we're supposed to trust our docs based on the info they have from the govt and my doc was reading right off his fax that came in this week from CDC saying trials are not expected to be completed for a while.
I left a message for the pediatrician this morning too. Barring any catastrophic results, I will probably make sure we are all vaccinated. Better safe than sorry...and it would kill me if something happened to the baby and he got sick and it could have been avoided.
this is an interesting map...
