anyone re-carpeting? new floors before baby?

i really want to, I am curious as too how much this could run? we have 1100 square feet including our bathroooms and kitchen which we wouldn't be doing. i want to spend less than $2K. I want to *really* spend $1K or less, but have absolutely no idea what this runs....

Re: anyone re-carpeting? new floors before baby?

  • We refinished the wood floors, but it has nothing to do with the baby.  We were planning on doing it anyway.
  • If you are thinking carpet Home Depot has an awesome special right now. They will install the whole house for as low as $139. It will just depend on the kind of flooring you want. We are going to be able to do our living room with new carpet and the best pad available for about $550 including install. HTH

  • I hate carpet so I'd rather wait and do wood floors if I currently had carpet.
  • HA new carpet for that much space will cost 1k alone, and that's for the cheap stuff.  You need atleast 2k to do it, I'd have 3 or 4k in the budget just in case.  We're redoing our flooring with an inexpensive laminate and It'll run us about 1100-1500 just for materials and my DH is installing himself.  Flooring is expensive.

  • We redid 2 rooms with wood flooring and are doing the baby's room in new carpet.  Total its running us about $800 but we are doing all the labor ourselves.  We are also planning to redo the kitchen in hardwood this coming winter after the baby is here, that is a huge room and will run us close to $1100.

  • we put new laminate/wood floors in the nursery ourselves (what a beating by the way) it's a 10x12 room &the total cost for all the flooring, underlayment & t-mold strips was around $400.  HTH.  Just get your square footage & multiply the cost per sq ft & you can get a rough idea of materials.  But don't forget about the padding that goes under & also the tack strips/t-mold pieces are more exspensive than you would think!  GL!

  • ditto home depot. You can get carpet for about .50 a sf (more for higher quality, obviously, but the stuff at that price really isn't that bad!)

    Installation - $139

    Pad - .69 SF x 1200 = 759

    Carpet - .50 x 1200 = 600

Whole house = 1489 (and that's including the bathroom and kitchen which you won't do but obviously I don't know the SF for that)

    Definitely doable in your budget!!

  • Well.......we actually just carpeted the baby's room and the master which is about 350 sq ft including closet space. Anyways we originally got a quote from home depot and they gave us a quote for like $1500. The carpert that I wanted was about $15-17/sq ft, which it was the short freizze (shag) carpet, not the pile or berber. I went to another place that is local and got a comparable color and style for $10/sq ft which total it cost just under $800 to carpet the rooms. That a big savings because I got what I wanted, so unless you are going with the less expensive carpet at home depot (if you're not picky) I would encourage you to look around and see if you have any local places that will beat the big home stores..............Good Luck!

  • We are going to put hard wood in the living room and tile the kitchen. We were going to do it even if we didn't get pg.
  • We are looking at new carpet as well, but in regards to the PP who said the following :

     Installation - $139

    Pad - .69 SF x 1200 = 759

    Carpet - .50 x 1200 = 600

I have never seen carpet that cheap at $0.50/sq ft.  you'd have to go to carpet stores and scope out their clearance depts or overstock, or maybe at some big seasonal sale.  The cheapest i've ever seen it is $0.99/sq ft.  You usually don't see carpet cheaper than the carpet pad, assuming you get the most basic carpet pad out there.  I could be wrong though. Also, make sure the installation includes removal of existing flooring!  Good luck. If you can't find carpet that inexpensive, i suggest just starting with a smaller space, or getting a rug to put down.

  • We just recarpeted our upstairs at like 1100 sq ft and it cost us $1700 for relatively cheap carpet ($1.49) and a 6 lb pad and the installation was like an additional $788. They removed and disposed of the old carpet and moved the furniture in two rooms as well. Not sure where you find fifty cent carpet especially since we got ours at an outlet shop. We priced carpet at five different locations. GL
  • We're re-doing the flooring in all the bedrooms w/ wood/laminate. Lumber Liquidators has some great deals. We're going to do the labor ourselves. It just depends on what kind of flooring you want and how high of quality. We haven't made a final decision on the flooring...we'll probably go in this weekend to check out our options. They start as low as 79 cents all the way up to the really pricey stuff. It's important to get a good moisture barrier pad to help soundproof (our house is 2 stories) and to give it more "cush".

  • Our basement flooded a couple weeks ago and we have to replace the carpet and pad. There is about 900 sq feet down there, and we went with an 8 pound pad with a moisture barrier and frieze carpet. Professionally installed it is running us $3300, and we talked them down quite a bit.

  • we did middle of the road carpeting in 2 rooms and it was 1100. The rooms weren't large either - like 10 by 10 and 10 by 12. So I think doing that for 1000 is probably unrealistic but maybe you can pick a room or two. We've been doing 2 rooms here and there for the past 2 years and we're now finished with the house (for now).
  • We're planning on redoing our floors in Bellawood.  All of the bedrooms (3), the hallway, the formal dining and formal living rooms.  We are going to re-tile our two bathrooms as well.  My grandparents put nice carpet and tile in our living room and kitchen already so we're lucky we don't have to redo the whole house.  I'm not sure what the square footage is, but I know it's going to cost an arm and a leg.  I'll get with DH about the actual numbers and edit this post later.
  • First of all, don't get .50 cent carpet when you're adding a baby to your house unless you want to replace it next year. You're going to need to get decent flooring, which is more like $2+.

If you're trying to save money, just replace flooring in the baby's room/living room as those are the areas that baby will spend the most time in.

  • thanks, ladies. i think i am going to look into the home depot deal, and definitely start with just the baby's room and living room. our carpet in this place is extremely beat up, i cannot imagine having a baby crawling around on these floors, so i think it's worth it....
