Breastfeeding

Pumping and avoiding plastic...is that contradictory?

I plan to breast feed and also pump and store my milk, but I like the idea of using the new glass bottles.  It looks like all milk storage bottles are plastic and even the pumps themselves are all plastic.  I know they're supposedly BPA free, etc, but I just don't like to support the oil companies by buying plastic.  Then I got to thinking that all other beverages that I would pour in a bottle, besides water, are packaged and sold in plastic.  Am I being totally rediculous?

  • I understand where you are going with this.  You can always recycle the milk bags.

  • Yes, definitely lots of plastic involved with pumping.  You can pump directly into Dr. Brown's glass bottles with a PISA (just know this from first hand experience - not sure about other pumps/bottles).  That would be an option if just storing in the fridge but I would not freeze in them.

You just figure out what is more important to you.  Your LO getting pumped BM vs supporting the oil industry.  You could also factor in what environmental impact the production of formula incurs as well...

  • I've had the same thought!  I use the glass Born Free bottles, and every time I pump I think about how I'm not sure using glass bottles does me any good since the milk spends so much time in plastic.  I pump into plastic bottles (the born free are too wide to use with the Lansinoh pump), then the freezer bags are plastic also.
