I really, really want to learn...but have no idea to start. I specifically want to make hats (textured hats with faces on them...saw some CUTE ones on etsy for Yo Gabba Gabba), but really do NOT know what to do!
Google or call around your local yarn stores. Usually they have classes you can take. That's what I did (I didn't stick with it, but it was fun and easy enough).
Check local knitting shops to see if they offer lessons. ?Sometimes it's just $25 a lesson. ?I guess that could add up. ?But basic knitting is not too difficult. ?
I used to but it has been a few years. And I only ever knew 3 or 4 stiches anyway. Check out your local craft store, they may offer classes or have a board where people who teach crafts post their #'s. Or you could check out youtube, I bet there are some instructional videos on there. If you go that route you won't be out a ton of $, all you need is the yarn and some needles.
I do! I taught myself as an adult, so you can definitely learn.
One book I have that I like is called "Itty Bitty Hats" and you can get it on amazon. It has lots of basic technique instruction at the beginning of the book plus a bunch of easy to follow instructions for adorable hats.
One warning, she uses really fancy yarn (sometimes even cashmere) which I would never ever use...so if you're going to substitute be sure you carefully measure your test swatch with whatever yarn and needles you decide to use so that you can adjust the size appropriately. I failed to measure well enough once and ended up making a newborn hat that just now is a good fit for my 8m/o! This doesn't matter much for blankets which is what I normally make, but it's very important for clothing items, LOL!
My aunt works at a retirement community and they have knitting groups 2 times a week. They also let anyone come and join(at no charge). I'd call around places like that, as well as craft/knitting stores, to see if they have anything.
I taught myself using the book titles "Stitch 'N B!tch". There is a crocheting one called "Happy Hooker". I found the directions really easy to follow. I have since knitted things from scarves to sweaters. I can normally follow directions from any book now, but often go back to these books for references.
