Is anyone here an LC?

I've posted this on the EFF board as well since I'm normally there but thought this would be a good place to ask as well. I've been trying to figure out what to do with my life and it finally occured to me that something that I am passionate about could actually be a career for me.

Is anyone here an Lactation Consultant or training to be one? Just curious to hear what your experiences have been. I"m going to do some research on it in the next few weeks.

Re: Is anyone here an LC?

  • StacyC is training to be one, or may already be one....she's on here most days.

  • Hi there- mad is right. :) i am doing my clinical hours right now. It is a lot of work- i would meet with an LC to discuss a career in LCing. You have to take a certified class (requires travel), take an exam and have over 500 clinical hours.

I can try to answer any questions you have.

  • StacyC's class always sounded really interesting.  I would want to take it just for the experience.
  • I have a couple of friends who just recently took the IBCLC exam... it was a ton of work for them...

and, they were both LLL Leaders - - for many many years - - so they had all kinds of real world experience.

...that's actually a great path to LC-dom, as your hours as a LLLL count toward the clinical hours you need as an LC-applicant.

    I am the 99%.
  • I'm taking a lactation counseling course in 2 weeks (really excited).  The course gives the credentials of Clinical Lactation Counselor which doesn't likely do much but the hours fulfill the IBCLC course hours.  If you google lactation consultant you can see the 3 pathways to becoming a lactation consultant based on your current credentials.  I'd talk to a LC in your area to judge demand and job opportunities.

  • Thank you everyone for all your responses. I will definitely contact someone and I am going to start going to LLL meetings as well I think. I've been trying to figure out which group in my area is most active since we're still a bit new to the area and DS was not born here.

There is actually a course that is listed on the IBLCE website for Pathway 2 that is in the town next over at their local college. If they have a night studies program in it it would be perfect for me so we'll see! I had no idea it was so involved but now I'm getting more and more excited about it the more I look into it.

I will definitely be pming a few of you for more info I think! Hope you don't mind!

  • dont mind at all. good luck and enjoy!!!! :)
