How many preemie things do I need?

I am just curious from you other MoM's how much preemie stuff should I plan to get? ?I assume that I will need some things and a going home from the hospital outfit but don't want to buy a ton if it's not needed. ?Did all your babies need premie clothes and if so for how long. ?These are our first babies so I have no clue. ?TIA!!!

  • Get a few sleepers and onesies each.  You can always get more once they're here if you need them.

    Ditto this.

My boys weren't preemies (37w6d) but they were in preemie clothes for about 2 weeks.

We had a few preemie sleepers, but honestly, we found it was easier to just have DDs in gowns when they were really tiny.  They were our first babies too and it was just easier to dress them and change diapers when you didn't have to deal with snaps!  The gowns were great because they didn't have to really "fit".  We just rolled up the sleeves and the 0-3 gowns worked just fine for the the first bit until they weren't swimming in the newborn sleepers.

ETA:  My DDs were born at 35w6d and were 5lb14oz and 4lb12oz.

  • We bought a few sleepers and onesies, but they were too short. Our twins were born at 35w2d and weighed 5lbs 1oz so the preemie clothes fit around, but were too short to fit their length. I just told myself that there would be plenty of time/family around for someone to go pick some more up if we needed them. At 6 weeks, they have just now grown out of newborn clothes.

  • I had hand-me-down preemie boy clothes from my SIL (nephew was born at 26 weeks) and I used a few sleepers and a few outfits that they wore to their first dr appts.

But mostly around the house they wore the little long sleeved snap t-shirts (size nb and 0-3) and swaddled blankets.  You can see my boys weights in my sig.

  • i had 4 preemie outfits for them - turned out they weren't preemies- but they still fit into them in their first week home (birth weights were 6lb6oz and 7lb 15.6oz)... so i'm glad we got them so they had clothes that weren't huge on them for their coming home outfits.

we just got a few things at carters.  I just sold then on ebay actually.

  • We only had 1 preemie sleeper for each.  DS was too long for preemies to begin with.  He was 6lbs14oz and 19 1/2" and was too big for them.  DD fit in them 5lbs7oz and 18", but we primarily had her in newborn gerber clothes, since they are smaller. They were still a little big on her, but it wasn't too bad.
  • my LOs were about 5 lbs and wore preemie for about 2 weeks or so ... I agree with pp about gowns. I wouldnt get too much as they grow fast!
  • We never used any of our preemie stuff.  We just put them in NB, which fit Eli fine.  They were a tad big on Ben, but he grew into them in a few weeks.  Their weights at birth are in my siggy, if you're interested.
  • Everyone including the dr tried to convince me that just because I was having twins, they would come early and be premies---NOT. I went 39 weeks and both were near 7lbs. My friend/co worker had twins at 40 weeks and both were near 8 pounds.
