New here? Failed my 1 hour glucose test and ?'s.

Hi there,

I usually post on SAIF and 2nd Tri, but I just failed my one hour glucose test and go for my 3 hour tomorrow.  I posted this on SAIF and they recommended this board to me.
My score was 159 and I had nothing, but a few bites of watermelon 2-3 hours before my test so I'm guessing my number sucks.  :(
I HATE needles and this is an absolute nightmare for me.  What can I expect?

Thanks for any insight you have!

  • I failed two one hours - one with a 138 & one with a 170 (before going on to fail the three hour).

The three hour test is a tad bit misleading as you'll be there a bit longer than three hours. Follow the directions your doctor gave you (each has a slightly different take on what to do, fasting, etc). You'll go into the lab & have a fasting draw done. You'll then drink the glucose drink and wait one hour (you may want to time things out yourself and let them know at 50-55 minutes that you'll be ready for your next draw in X time), then you'll have your 1 hour draw. Rinse & repeat for your 2nd and 3rd draw. Bring a book to read & a snack to eat as soon as the test is over.

  • GD is not the end of the world!!

That said, 150s are NOT horrible numbers, and you could still pass the 3 hour!

This board is so funny to me because the population is so different than our clinic :)  People here are so proactive about their health and worried about 150s, while in our clinic we routinely have people with 1hrs over 300!

I used to hate needles and blood draws too, and have a TON of diabetes in my family so I had a long time fear of being diagnosed at some point, but honestly, its so much easier to manage when you just realize you're doing it all for the baby... every fingerstick, blood draw, and insulin shot is for a healthy baby... just keep telling yourself that :)

  • this is what i experienced.

Appointment is in the early hours -first appointment since you are fasting overnight

They take your blood # 1

You drink one of those drinks (a bit different from your one hour -i think it's much sweeter and much nastier)

One hour passes & they take your blood # 2

second hour passes & they take your blood # 3

third hour passes & they take your blood # 4

Then you go home.  One huge tip i have is to ask them if there is an available spare room for you to nap between the hours.. The time flew by! The first hour i thought i was going to pass out so they gave me a room and the second and third hour flew by.

Also, another tip -set up your own alarm.. I did that with my phone after every hour just in case they somehow forgot.. and of course each hour i was the one that got out of my room and reminded the nursers to take my blood -it has to be done one hour exactly.

One last quick note - Most likely you do not have GD, but if you do -Don't blame yourself! Just change your diet and you and your baby will be fine.

    good luck!

  • Just like the others have said they take your blood 4 times total, and I also had to give a urine sample each time they took my blood. I was able to have water through the test but that was it. I like the idea of a snack after, I was starved by the end of it. Dont forget to bring something to do for 3 hours. Good luck.
  • I asked them to use tiny needles for all 4 draws and it wasn't that bad.

A tip from me is don't go home after the test and eat a bunch of sugar. I thought I was going to fail and not knowing anything about GD I thought I better get in my sugar fix before I can't have it anymore and I made myself really sick from just eating a few cookies after drinking the straight glucose.

Good luck and if you do fail we are here for you.
