Breastfeeding

Please recommend your pump

I'm sure you get sick of this being asked, but I just found out that my insurance will cover any pump at 100% as long as I have doctor's orders for it!

I've heard good things about the medela PIS and Ameda purely yours...I do know that I want a double electric whatever brand we end up with.

What do you have and what do you love/hate about it?  What accessories did you register to go with it??

Thanks in advance : )

Re: Please recommend your pump

  • The Medela Freestyle. It's small, portable and offers a hands free setting. I have it and love it! Friend of mine had another brand, but bought the freestyle when she wasn't able to pump much with the other. The Freestyle literally gave her three times as much!

  • Wow, what great insurance!

I have the Medela PISA, which I really like... but if I could have gotten it for free, I'd have gotten the Medela freestyle because you can pump hands-free with it!

  • I have the Freestyle and it's been great.  I even got a free set of tubing from Medela when my connections started getting loose.   If it's free I'd go for it no matter your work/stay home situation since you will want to go somewhere without baby at some point.  FWIW I always advocate waiting to pump though (barring a bumpy road w/ BFing) until 4 weeks.  Once you start pumping it adds work, it's exciting at first but a pain in the *ss once it's routine.

  • I am very aware how lucky we are that ins will cover the full cost : )

We are planning on breasfeeding for the most part, but I want to be able to pump some so my hubby can do some of the night feedings and bond with our little man as well.  Plus once I go back to work fulltime (hopefully after 12 weeks) I will have to pump during the day.

I appreciate all the input and support!

  • Congrats on the full cost being covered...my insurance gave us $50.  I have the PISA and really like it. I got a strap from Pumpin Pal that I can hook the bottles up to and pump hands free.  The PISA takes about 5 minutes for me to set-up/take apart (plug it in, attach the tubing, etc).  I usually pump for 10-20 minutes. GL!

  • Unless you are going back to work and know you will need a pump, I would wait and see if you really need one. I fully planned on pumping and bottle feeding PT, but I quickly realized that would be more work for me so I never started.
