Does she have a nightlight in her room? I wonder if she'd "try" to find things more if she could see a little.
Otherwise it sounds like you are doing the right things. Too bad about your friend. If your DS acts the same way or not you need to teach her that crying/screaming isn't the way to get what you want/need.
