Re: For those that delivered at 34 + days

  • 34 weeks, 4 days.

13 days in the NICU.  She never required any sort of medical assistance (no breathing, eating, etc.).  She had severe jaundice that rebounded 3 times (we were set to take her home 2 times and her numbers came back bad again).  So she spent 11 of those 13 days under the bili lights.  Feedings were tough, because we only had 30 mins. every 3 hours to get her to eat.  The jaundice makes them sleepy, but they need to eat to poo it out.  It's a brutal cycle, but she broke it on day 12.  Day 13 was one more blood draw and we were out!

I had the steroid shots at 27 weeks.  Her apgars were 9 & 9, always breathing room air, straight from the initial NICU warmer for evaluation to an open air crib, and took her first bottle about 2 hours after she was born.  She only ate 2 mls. the first one, but 20 mins. later ate a full ounce.

We were EXTREMELY lucky it worked out this way.  I am forever grateful and very fortunate.

  • I just wanted to pop in and say CONGRATS for keeping those girls in so long. I know it's been frightening.

    Keep us posted!

  • DD was born at 34 weeks exactly and spent 8 days in the NICU.  She didn't need any breathing/feeding support which is why she had a short stay.

  • Thanks! I have a feeling Baby B will spend more time in NICU than Baby A. I am worried, but it sounds like Baby B will do better on the outside than inside.

  • I delivered at 34 weeks exactly.  DD was big for a 34 weeker, 5lbs 13oz!  She spent 10 days in the nicu.  She was on the cpap for 12 hrs and she had some fluid on her lungs.  She did end up being pretty severely jaundiced and was under the lights for quite awhile.  But for the most part, she was a feeder and grower.

Good luck on friday and let us know if you have any other quetsions!!

  • Just wanted to stop in and say hi and congrats!  I haven't been over on SAIF for weeks (months even?) and am very glad to see that those babies have kept baking for this long!  Good luck!
  • Saw your post on SAIF.  Chris was a 35 weeker (one hour into 35 weeks) and he spent 7 days in the NICU.  He was on CPAP from when he got to the NICU a bit after 1 am until around 10 in the morning.  He was under billi lights for a few days, had apneas and bradycardias.  He came home on a monitor for them.  He was an amazing eater with the premiee nipples they used.  He ate 20 ml the day he was born!  Once we moved to BF'ing, that was an entire new issue.

My nieces were TTTS at 36w and one of the girls stayed in the NICU for 10 days.  She was 4 pounds 4 ounces and 14 inches long!  Her sister came home when SIL was discharged.

  • Mine were born at 34 w 6 d and each spent 26 days in the nicu...although i never had a steroid shot, and they had ttts and one baby was iugr.  they did have some breating assistance for the first week and then they wre just feeders and growers!

good luck to you and congrats for making it this far :)

  • My sister had an emergency c-section at 33 weeks 2 days. Her daughter was in the NICU for exactly 3 weeks. She never was on any breathing machines and was fed through an IV for a little over a week before she started bottle feeding. My sister went on bedrest at 31 weeks and started getting steriod shots twice a week at that point because they knew she would need to deliver early due to pre-e.

I've been following your blog, Babbs and even though I am a internet stranger, I just wanted to wish you the best of luck!! I bet it will be so amazing to finally meet your daughters. You will be in my thoughts in the coming days!

  • My girls were born at 34w5d and didn't need any breathing help. We thought our baby B, Elise, would need to stay longer due to IUGR. She was only 3lbs 12oz at birth and Ana was 5lbs 5oz. On Friday morning the drs said that Ana would probably be ready to go home the next day and that Elise was a few days behind. I joke that Elise heard them say that and didn't want to be left behind because she finished every bottle for the rest of the day and they let her come home with her sister the next morning!

They both spent 10 days in the NICU has feeders and growers. Great job for cooking your babies that long! Keep us updated!~

  • 34w6d, she was in for 2 weeks, we did have the steroid shots starting a week prior to birth.
  • DD was born at 34w2d and spent 23 days in the NICU.  She was a feeder/grower from the beginning and once she figured out how to eat, she was home within a few days.  She's had no other medical issues.
  • I delivered at 34 weeks 1 day.  DS was a big boy weighing 7 lbs 2 oz.  He spent 22 days in the NICU.  I didn't have time to get the steroid shot for his lungs so he had some problems breathing in the beginning.  He was on oxygen with vapotherm for 1 weeks and then was on room air.  Since he was so big he didn't have many problems regulating his body temperature and was in the incubator for a week before he was in a regular crib.  It took him 3 weeks to learn to eat by mouth... he just didn't have the suck, swallow, breathe down.  He also had some issues with his heart rate and oxygen dropping.

It's great that you're getting the steroid shots!  I hope everything goes well.  This board is full of supportive women so feel free to come with questions, vents, etc. anytime!

  • Gwen was born at 34w3d.  She spent 8 days in the NICU.  She had trouble maintaining temperature and was burning too many calories trying to stay warm.  She was on the feeding tube twice just because she had to work so hard to eat from a bottle and could not gain the weight needed.  She did spend one day under the lights for jaundice, but had no trouble breathing.  I'm so happy you made it this far and can't wait to follow your story more on SAIF!
