Birthday Gifts

Are we expected to open gifts during DD's birthday party (like at a baby shower)? Or do we open them after the party?

Re: Birthday Gifts

  • so far I have seen them open gifts... but it was a 2nd birthday... so I guess it's fun to watch their reactions... but for the 1st birthday I didn't see them open gifts....

p.s. was at Target on Jeranimo yesterday and there were bunch of Hello Kitty stuff on their dollar shelves... thought it would be a cute favors for the little ones :)

  • All of the year parties I have gone to have opened them during the party.

  • we opened after the party - pissed some people off but it would have taken forever and i had a cranky baby.

Ditto this.  Time got way out of control and there were a million gifts.  Would've taken forever and I think that would've annoyed people further!

I have always seen them opened at the party, but they were all very small casual parties. I think if you're having a larger party I would open them later.

  • We opened them during the party. It was great, Jack was really into to it.
  • I've always opened at the party. If its a large party, maybe announce that you'll be opening the presents later. I know some people like to see their gift being opened.
  • For DD's 1st b-day, we opened gifts after the party, but I think some people wanted us to open them during.  I figured it was too much, would take too long. Plus, there was no way DD was going to stick around too long for that.  For her 2nd b-day party, we did open gifts at the party, but we had a small party so it wasn't too bad.  People seemed to enjoy watching her do this.  And she was more into the gift opening this time.
  • The only children's birthday parties I have gone to in recent years are either for my best friend's two children, or for DH's best friend's daughter.  So it's a really small sample size.  That said, they have never opened gifts at the parties, always after.  But they are somewhat large parties, and they have activities for the kids -- bounce house, petting zoo, reptiles, pinata.

Anyway, there are a ton of kids at those parties, and I don't think the kids would have tolerated a break in the action to open gifts.
