Toddlers: 24 Months+

? for those who've potty trained their DS:

Hi, I usually post on 12-24, but I am wondering if anyone here can help. DS seems to be showing signs of readiness to PT. He points down "there"when he pees in his diaper and seems to be uncomfortable once he is wet.

Does anyone have suggestions on whether we should get a potty or a trainer seat for our big toilet? I was thinking I'd first try the trainer seat for the big toilet and if that is no good, then getting a regular potty, b/c I think we will need the trainer seat eventually anyway.  He does not seem to be scared of the big toilet. (Tries to put his hands and toys in it if we forget to put the cover down. lol)

He is 18.5 months and about 34 inches and about 28 lbs if that matters.

Also, I'm thinking Pampers Easy ups are the way to go when starting to train?

TIA for any help in advance!

Re: ? for those who've potty trained their DS:

  • We bought a trainer seat and would sit DS on it before his bath and right when he got up in the morning. Then we gradually worked our way into doing it more times a day, but not until he was about 22 months. We never bought a regular potty, just two training seats(one for upstairs and one for downstairs) and two stools.

We used whatever was on sale for pull ups.

  • J was intimidated by the big potty. We started with a potty seat and eventually he asked for a little potty after seeing one at his little buddy's house. He literally started using it the second we opened the box and hasn't looked back. I would be willing to bet money he would have trained sooner if we went with the little potty first.

Also, I prefer pull-ups to easy-ups. Not only does huggies give better coupons but the sides are re-fastenable.

  • We're working on potty training our DS, but it's slow going.  We've been using a trainer seat on the regular potty (DS just never quite *got* the little potty), and I would add:  get a stool so he can climb up there and get down again more easily.

If you can catch his interest on this, it could go really fast.  Good luck!

  • we have both types of potty seats and she never seems to see a difference.
  • DS didn't like the little potty and refused to go on it. So I bought a seat for the big potty and he has done great. We have a stool(when he doesn't carry it somewhere else in the house to get something he wants) so he can get up and down easier. We used pull-ups but only when we went out and about. When we got serious about training I just put him in underwear at home and cleaned up the mess for the first few days.  I let him pick out some underwear which he loved. We introduced the potty and sat him on it a couple times a day for about 3 weeks before we put him in underwear and go serious about it.
