So, Kay has had hives since Wed. afternoon. The Dr's think that it is an allergic reaction to something - maybe an antibiotic, maybe food, or something we will never figure out. We saw the Pedi. this am for a follow up appt. I was told to keep doing what we've been doing, but Kay is misearable. He woke up from his am nap with swollen lips and face! I called the pedi. again who said this was normal. I have no experience with this type of thing. Here is a link to photos on facebook:

So my question is this: Does this look like a normal reaction to you? Would you bring him back into the ER? What could they do for hives besides benedryl?

He is breathing fine, and drinking, not eating the greatest. The pedi. wasn't very empathetic to my concerns (I'm going to be switching). I know I shouldn't be seeking medical advice from a message board, but I'm a concerned mom looking for someone who has experienced an allergic reaction before. We will be seeing an allergist, although the Dr didn't seem to optimistic that we would find out what the cause was. Advice? Flame? Help!

  • So the pedi didnt offer advice? WTH? I would probably be going to the ER at this point. They should take blood and see what is going on. I am not familiar with a allergic reaction, so I dont know if that is what it looks like.

Does he have a fever? oh man I feel bad for him.

  • When we were admitted on Thurs. he had a temp of 102, his hands and feet were swollen. The temp has subsided. I just feel so helpless . . . He actually asked in his most pathetic voice to go to the doctor! He's itchy and can not sleep. I just wonder if they can give him a dose of steroids or something?

Did they draw blood? They might be able to give a steroid. Have you given benedryl at all? I didnt fully read your PP, so sorry if I am asking redundant questions.

  • So the rash always comes after the abx?  I think that's a pretty classic presentation (delayed onset).  It he still taking the abx?

    Is benadryl helping?

  • Is he still on the antibiotic? I would take him to the ER. There has to be something they could do to make him feel even a little better.
  • Yes, they drew blood to check for liver and kidney function because the admitting Dr. thought he had HSP -  google it. The images are horrific his rash thankfully does not look like that. If he wakes up and looks similar to how he did this afternoon I'm going to head back in. F&^% the Dr. I need some piece of mind.
  • Oh, and I answered in your other post, but DD had a reaction to amoxicillin on the last day of the treatment. It was just a flat rash at that time. From what I understand, if you keep giving an antibiotic that they are allergic to, the reaction gets worse each time.

Good to know. He has been on so many antibiotics, that it is difficult to pin point. This rash happened after FINISHING 2 rounds of different antibiotics. It started out flat, and now has changed to being more hive like. I just want him to feel better.

  • If you take him in, let us know how it turns out. Poor guy!
