Suddenly very thirsty and nursing problem

Background:  I have low supply (1-2 ounces total) and supplement 2 oz at every feeding.  This is all with the LC's blessing.  We've tried everything.

Anyway, a few days ago I suddenly started being very thirsty all the time.  I can drink a liter and then 5 minutes later want another.  Also, at about the same time, my LO started pulling off after only a few sucks.  I'm having a hard time getting him to nurse for more than a few minutes total especially on the side he's always liked the most.  He is acting like there is no milk.  After he nurses and give him his bottle, and he's still hungry.  I always put him back on, but he will only take a suck or two.  He's not a paci guy and won't suck if there's no milk.  I pump afterward and have been getting the same amount I usually get after a feeding (less than 1/2 ounce).

Anyone have any idea want could be going on?  I realize he could be going through a growth spurt but would that cause the insane thirst and nursing problems?  I have a hard time getting him to latch at all.

To clarify:  My LO is 3 months and the sudden increase in thirst was a few days ago.

  • I drink ALL the time now that I am nursing.  I think your body just needs a ton of fluids to make milk. Have you read The Nursing Mothers Companion? It is really helpful and has so much info.

Do you have a clogged duct?  I think I am going through that now and my LO has been frantic and unhappy when nursing from one side and I believe its because hes not getting enough bc its clogged.  Maybe that?

  • I would call your doc if you're worried and have them run bloodwork. A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that dries up the fluids in the body...dry eyes, thirsty, and milk went down. With a little effort, she is still BFing.
  • I would definitely call your doc for bloodwork. I'm no medical professional, but the first thought that popped into my head was diabetes. One of the first signs is extreme thirst, and while I have no idea what effect it would have on breastmilk production, it seems like there might be some.
