First of all, I am not a person with body image issues normally. I have been a healthy weight my whole life and have never been unhappy with my size or dieted or done anything drastic to lose weight. That's just not me.
Now that I'm pg and my body is changing, I'm having trouble dealing with this. My fear is not that I'll gain weight - I realize I will, I'm fine with it, and I still eat well and never go hungry.
My fear is that I'm gaining too much weight for only being 15 weeks. I am worrying that my "bump" is too big for 15 weeks... that most of it is probably fat and maybe I'm gaining too fast and will soon hear from my doctor that I need to watch my weight.
I am 5'7" and have always been told that I won't show for a while, since my torso is longer and there is more room to grow. But twice this week strangers have noticed the bump. It makes me worried. I know I'm probably not being rational, but I'd like to hear what you all think... anyone going through something similar?
Re: Weight/body issues while pg?
I'm going through the exact same thing. I had someone notice early even though I'm generally tall and thin and I can still fit into most of my pre-preg clothes. I've always had an easy time staying thin, but now when I look at the scale I just get sad. It already looks like I've gained more than the "recommended" weight for my week.
I guess it is going to require a change in my frame of mind. This is a good weight gain - I will eat responsibly and exercise, but I need to gain weight to make sure my boy is healthy and well-developed.
It is hard - as women we spend all of these years with the "weight gain = bad" mindset, and now we have to change that.
Just because you're tall doesn't mean you won't show early. You could easily have a bump by now.
At your next appt ask your Dr if he will measure your fundal height. Basically there is an acceptable measurment for each week. At my 29 week appt my fundal height was measuring at 31.5 weeks. At my 34 week appt I was measuring exactly 34 weeks. At least you will kind of know where you stand.
If you were at a healthy weight pre preg and your eating habits are healthy, your body will gain what it needs to. I wouldn't worry too much if you are staying on track. Now if you are eating a bunch of junk and gaining, then you need to fix that. Otherwise, don't worry so much.
I am 5'6" and weighed 120 pre preg, size 0/2. I have put on 15lbs already at nearly 20 wks. I gained a total of 35 w/ my last PG, and I'm assuming this time will be about the same.
Good Luck
I think we are twins. I feel exactly the same. The only difference is I'm 5'8"
I talked to my doctor and she says I'm right on track, but I still feel weird. Again...I know I'm supposed to gain weight, and I'm not worried about it in the long run..just worried it's happening too fast!
A stranger asked me if I was pregnant the other day and I started to get all offended....I just don't feel THAT pregnant yet, so it's just odd to me.
You are definitely not the only one struggling to adapt to your "new" body. I started showing really really early even though this baby is my first (PM me if you want and I'll send you my earliest bump picture). By 14 weeks, I had a distinct bump and it was getting noticed by strangers as well.
While there is such a thing as gaining "too much weight" in pregnancy, every woman's body reacts differently to the changes that occur. Some of us (myself included) have been shocked to watch the numbers on the scale skyrocket. I was a size 6 before I got pregnant and around 147lbs. Now, I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I've gained about 24lbs. Yup, that's above average for what I "should" have gained by now, but I'm doing what I can- eating healthy, cutting down on junk food, and (trying) to get some exercise. Above that, there's really not much else that can be done.
In the end, your body will gain as much weight as you need for your pregnancy and as long as you're doing your part to take care of yourself, then you're being healthy about it. You will probably have some weight to lose after you give birth (women only lose on average 12-15lbs. during labor), but that's normal and your body will bounce back!!! Hope this helps!!
