Curious about when to Register

Ok my mom and my lil'l cousin ( she's like a sister) are dying to go "baby shopping" so they keep hounding me mainly about finding out the sex so they can buy "cute stuff" vs needed...

("ok I get it - I reeeeally do---and thanks Big Smile but please chill out" )

They also keep hounding me about "when are you going to go register"- I think its still a little early... . When did all of you start to register not so much look --- as I do that everyday but actually go register??

Thanks ahead of time ladies- I appreciate it!

Re: Curious about when to Register

  • We're not registering until almost 21 weeks when we go for the big u/s and hopefully find out the gender.
  • Loading the player...
  • We wanted to know the gender before registering, so went the weekend after our big ultrasound (18 weeks).  If you're doing gender neutral stuff, I don't see a problem with doing it earlier.
  • I registered about a month ago.  Only because I was getting overwhelmed by what we would need to get for baby and wanted to make a list for myself.

The one problem with doing that is I'm sure by the time my shower happens, some of the things I've registered for may no longer be carried by the store, etc.  But you'll get a notification of that when you log in to edit your registry and you can always just change it.

Also, I didn't tell anyone that I was registered this early.  People will find out when the shower invitations go out.

  • I registered at 24 weeks, a couple of days ago.  If you want to know the sex, I wouldn't register until you've found out for sure.  In my case (I have a friend who lost her baby at 22/23 weeks), I didn't want to register until the baby was viable, it would be heartbreaking to receive gifts and then have a loss.

  • I registered at about 24 weeks, but that's only because I was too lazy to do it before! lol..I think a lot of people do it after their big 20 week U/S so they know what they are having and can register for more stuff.  We aren't finding out, so that's probably why I put it off, because it was a little harder to register for all neutral stuff.  I think whenever you feel ready to register, just go for it.  Good luck!
  • I think I was about 25 weeks pregnant with dd when we registered.  It can be very overwhelming, so be sure to read the reviews and ratings on products before going so you will have a general idea of what you want.
  • I waited until I found out the gender because I wanted to do the room in blue for my baby boy or pink if we found out it was a girl. But that was around 20 weeks. But really, it's up to you when you want to register. You could now and pick gender neutral colors.
  • Like the other pp said, DH and I are waiting till our gender U/S at 20 weeks to register. However, we have gone to BRU at least twice to "try out" many of the items we are interested in, like strollers and car seats, so when we do go back to register, it should be relatively quick and painless.
  • We decided to start our registry the day of our U/S (which was yesterday).  We were lucky to find out what we were having so I was able to do some gender stuff.  I only started and by no means am I finished.  My friend bought me stuff and gave it to me before I was even out of my 1st trimester and some more in my 2nd.  It's over whelming at that point to me, b/c I didn't even want to buy anything yet.  I still don't want to really buy anything just yet either.  I feel like its too early.  I'm taking my time getting the nursery done, but I won't finish at the last minute.

It's hard for family to back off, but now that I am pregnant, in the future when I buy for others, I'll patiently wait until they register or if I buy something here or there, I'm not going to tell the mother and wait to give it to her at the shower.

Ok, sorry, I guess that was sort of a vent too.  LOL!

  • After we found out the gender! I think that's the best time if you ask me!
  • In the next week or so, probably. I think around 20 weeks is plenty of time and if you are going to find out the gender, it's likely easier to make some of your decisions after you find out.

I did start a registry online a couple of weeks ago but, only because my sister was in town and was helping me with what I would need for BF'ing (I'm going to buy all of it myself, just wanted somewhere to "store" the info).

  • I'm probably the only one on here that registered the day I found out I was PG. Then after we found out it was a boy just added a few things that were boyish. You can do it when ever you want, but like PP have said if something get discontinued then you will have to pick new stuff out.
  • My mom keeps telling me I need to register, but we are going to wait until the big u/s. That hasn't stopped DH from researching strollers and car seats though.

  • I started the registry last week. I have been researching products and adding as I go. Since we plan on having more than one child - I am registering for mostly gender neutral items (especially the big items). After we find out if it's a girl or boy - I will add a few gender specific items. I believe we will receive PLENTY of pink or blue - regardless of what we register for!

I suggest getting a head start on the research aspect - if you are like me and need to know as much as you can about products. It's time consuming and overwhelming. Baby Bargains and Consumer Reports have been great...as have product reviews on Babies-R-Us and Target. Have fun!!

  • Our ultrasound is Sept. 8th.  We plan on registering after that.
