2nd Trimester

Down lbs? How? What are you eating?

I've gained 10 (mostly in my boobs!), but my bump is so, so tiny.  I've read how some of you girls are further along than me (16 wks) and are down as much as 6 lbs.  Is this from m/s or diet or what?  I don't want to gain weight and want to do whatever it is you are doing!  :)

Re: Down lbs? How? What are you eating?

  • I would not worry about your weight gain that much. Is perfectly okay to gain weight, the only difference is that some of us gain weight earlier in pregnancy others later.

Diets are a big NO-NO during pregnancy. As long as you eat healthy and avoid eating for two, you can't do much wrong.

I lost 5 lbs during the first months of my pregnancy because of severe m/s. But since then I have already gained 14 lbs so far - I am not worried at all!! :) I try to eat healthy, don't like sodas and hardly ever eat junk food. That's all! No diet!! ;)

Think like this: Everything changes in your body and not only your boobs started to grow, also your blood volume increases, you uterus, your fluid volume, the amniotic fluid....etc.

  • While I am still down about 4 pounds from my prepregnancy weight, I am not doing anything to stay here, in fact I want to gain weight! Dieting and trying not to gain weight is dangerous for your baby.... your baby's health and your health should be the utmost concern at this point not the numbers on the scale...

Even plus size women are told by their doctors to gain between 10-25 pounds, depending on the woman.... Please don't diet or try not to gain weight... you are risking your baby's health...

  • Most people that lose weigh altogether are probably overweight to begin with. I am overweight and have lost about 6 pounds so far. I started out a little over 190 pounds on a 5'6'' frame. My doctor isn't worried and told me that if I eat right, there is a good chance I can maintain my weight. But if you start off at a healthy weight, there is no reason not to gain weight.
  • I've gained 10lbs as well - at just about 15 weeks. But my midwife seemed to think that was just fine! You're going to gain weight - whether it's gradually, or all at once, you will absolutely gain. And I've been told that 25-35 is healthy for someone of "normal" size.
  • I've been puking every day since the day before my BFP except for like 2 weeks. And I'm finally starting to break even again (I think I'm down 1-2 lbs). I would gladly trade places with you though if you've been feeling great and keeping food down!
  • I really think your body is just going to do what it's going to do...at least that is what mine is doing! I have gained 20 lbs. and my eating habits haven't changed much during the pregnancy. Nobody can believe that's how much I've gained but that's what the scale tells me- I seem to be all belly though. I imagine the girls that haven't gained much or lost probably feel the same way and aren't "dieting." Every body is different.
  • I'm down 10-15 pounds, but to be honest, I was pretty obese to begin with (ugh, I hate that word!)  My m/s has stopped me from my regular eating habits.  I'm actually not eating enough!  I desire to be able to sit down to a plate of food and actually be able to eat it.  I wouldn't worry one bit about your weight.
  • Like a PP said, everyone gains weight at different times in their pregnancy.  I was down 13 lbs by week 11 and I didn't throw up once.  By week 32 I had gained that 13lbs back, plus 8 lbs.  By week 34 I'd gained an additional 7lbs, and at my 35 wk appt a few days ago I was up another 5 for a total of 20lbs gained from my pre-preg weight.  My eating habits haven't changed at all in the last several months and I think I'm just one who packs it on at the end of her pregnancy.

Do NOT worry about the number on the scale, as long as you're getting the nutrition you need and you and your baby are healthy, it doesn't matter.  You are going to gain weight, accept it now and move on!

This. Gaining weight is a fact of being pregnant. Your body needs nourishment, and proper nourishment at that. While it is not healthy to go all out crazy, you are going to gain weight. The new guidelines say that if you have a normal BMI (18.5-24.9 kg/m2) you should gain between 25-35 lbs. More info here https://www.babycenter.com/0_pregnancy-weight-gain-what-to-expect_1466.bc

  • I'm still down about 14, this week I've finally gained a few back.  I think the reason I've lost weight is because I crave sweet drinks, so I'll drink some juice or Root beer (on occassion) then when I eat I find I eat less because the sweet drinks have filled me up.  I also couldn't eat meat for about 10 weeks so that contributed to my weight loss, and I'm overweight and eating better so it'll naturally come off at first.  Just make sure you're eating well and don't worry about it too much.  Honestly everyone gains differently and as long as your baby is healthy that's all you should worry about.

  • I up about 5-7 lbs (17 weeks today) which I think is not much, kinda wish I had a few more pounds.  Most was put on in the earlier stages (I was on Adkins before I knew I was pregnant, and seemed to pack it on once I added carbs) but can't seem to add more than a pound or two lately or I gain it and it goes back down.  I figure I won't be concerned unless my doctor says anything.  I just try to eat balance meals and let the weight go whichever way it will (and no m/s for me so that wasn't a factor)

  • You're gonna gain weight regardless.  I lost some weight at first, but I have since gained about 15lbs.  I drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit and i eat raisin bran crunch for about 2 meals per day.  I don't eat cereal to lose weight, I just love it now Smile  Don't worry about how much weight you gain.  All you can do is try to eat healthy.
  • I'm still down six because my nausea/morning sickness is still awful. Believe me, you don't want to do what I'm doing...it's torture. I wish I could enjoy food. I wish I could put on some weight.

The grass is not greener over here, I promise.

  • Well I have never admitted this to anyone other than my dr (obviously) and dh, but I have lost near 30 lbs. Yes that says thirty and isn't a typo. I was pretty overweight when I started out and I had to drastically change my diet when I found out about my diabetes early on. I vowed I would eat healthy and right for my child (and myself) from the very beginning. I was also at the gym 6 days a week (up until a week ago) doing cardio and minor weight lifting.

    ?

My dr is not concerned at all, and in fact we haven't had a weight discussion ever. I feel some gain coming on soon though as I get ready to hit the same second tri growth spurt I got with my son. I always feel hungry now. Although I do have a touch of 2nd tri MS mixed with the inability to eat ANY dairy products without my stomach turning in knots for the next hour or so.

    ?

My baby is growing and my belly is growing for sure, I am just losing weight in my legs, butt, arms, and face.?

  • I am almost 20 weeks and down 5 pounds. No m/s at all this pregnancy and I eat like a horse.  Three very full meals, snacks through the day with my toddlers, and cookies and whole milk after they are in bed each night.  Every body is different.

That is true but you can also lose weight which makes it look like you didn't gain or gain much.  In my case I tend to lose during pregnancy (probably from giving up the beer/wine).  With Paige she weighed 9 pounds 1 oz and I only wound up 13 pounds over where I started by the end (no m/s).   With Sarah she was 8 pounds 11 oz and I did have m/s so only wound up 10 pounds over where I started.  This pregnancy no m/s but I'm still down 5 pounds now from where I started and I am eating like crazy...all day long something is going in my mouth.  It's just how my body is and the doctors are not worried.  I lost weight initially and was stuck at the same number for months.  This week I finally went up a pound on the scale and was so happy.  If it's like the other pregnancies now I will start to gain a little here and there but since it's happening later this time (before it was around 16 weeks the scale started to go up again) I am guessing I will wind up only up 5 or so pounds from where I started by the end.  We'll see I guess!

  • This is certainly not an area where you want to compare yourself to others.  It has so many variables.  Prepregnancy weight, m/s, exercise routines, diet, and just your body in general.  Focus on yourself, and having a healthy pregnancy.

  • I think everyone needs to stop looking at the scale.  If your doctor has concerns about your weight gain/loss, they will tell you.
  • I'd go ahead and part with the weight gain fears now. It's should happen for most everyone... I'm overweight and even I'm supposed to gain 15-20lbs - and it will happen eventually.

The only change I made from pre-PG is that I divide my usual intake into 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day out of necessity. A "normal," pre-PG sized meal makes me too full too quickly and brings on wicked heartburn.

I tend to avoid "bad carbs" and stick to whole grain/wheat due to insulin resistance anyway but I'm not above a french fry. Or dark chocolate peanut M&Ms. MMmmm.

  • I'm 18 weeks and down 10 pounds.  It's from morning sickness - I was sick until 16 weeks.  At my last dr.'s appt. (Tuesday), I did gain half a pound.  So I think I'm finally on the gaining trend rather than the losing trend.

  • Are you serious?
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • it's from m/s and lack of appetite.

i don't recommend puking every day for 22 weeks.  seriously.  enjoy your weight gain.  this is a shiiitty post.

  • I've only gained 3lbs so far this pregnancy -nothing I'm excited about, actually something that's concerning to me. I think that since I'm eating 5 small meals a day since the beginning, it's boosted my metabolism, even though I'm eating plenty of calories/fat (probably much more than the recommended 300 extra calories a day, except I'm getting them through healthy foods, not cake and ice cream). If you're worried about gaining too much weight, eat lots of healthy foods and don't splurge everyday on junk food. As others have said, dieting during pregnancy is very unhealthy so don't do that.

I wouldn't be envious-it's much too early in your pregnancy. Some people pop early and then don't put on a lot of weight at all towards the end, while others get a later start with the weight gain. SIL was up 20lbs by 20 weeks, only ended up gaining 25lbs by the end. Another friend had horrible MS up until 20 weeks and had lost weight, ended up being up 45lbs by the end.
