Recommend a bottle brand for breastfeeding...

I'm planning on breastfeeding, but I imagine I will need bottles for when I return to work. What brand/type do you ladies suggest?

Re: Recommend a bottle brand for breastfeeding...

  • it really depends on what your baby will take.

I'd recommend registering (if you're registering for bottles) for/buying a single bottle in several different types.  The general rule of thumb is that you'd want something with a wide base with a nipple that "looks" like yours - usually something kind of cylindrical rather than the orthodontic nipple.

But again, it really really depends on your kid.  Mine threw all the conventional thoughts on "best bottle" out the window.  She would only take EBM from a cup, so... take that as you will, lol Smile

  • I used the Playtex dropins nursers (4oz) with the latex nipples with DD--it was the only kind she would take.  BUT we did not learn this without a lot of trial and error, so I suggest (and was told this by LCs) to only buy loe bottle of a couple different kinds ahead of time.  I had some from samples and gifts and used those for her early bottles by the time you go back to work you'll know what kind of bottles/nipples you like and your baby likes best and you can buy more at that time.

  • We are going to be using the playtex ventaire ones (because we got the $26 dollar sets for $6), and I registered for a couple other types of bottles just to see incase she doesn't like those.
  • My LLL leader recommends playtex ventaire wide neck bottles because they have softer nipples and are wide.  She said so far, in her experience Avent are the worst because they ahve the toughest nipples, but that is all DD would take.  My DS wouldn't take any bottles, including the Adiri that is supposed to look and feel more like a breast.  I wouldnt' stock up on one kind, but get different ones and see what your baby likes best.

  • I read somewhere that Breastflow bottles are good for breastfeeding babies- it most closely resembles/mimics the nipple.

Used these with the silicon nipples. When DS was a few months old and eating more quickly we switched to MAM bottles (Ultivents, I think). He did fine with both.

  • I used Avent with DD#1--my LC recommended them because they had the widest "base". My daughter experienced no "nipple confusion" with these and they were very easy to clean (something you do need to consider). She didn't like the Playtex or Dr. Brown ones (Dr. Brown's have lots of parts to them making them hard to clean--and they leak). I'm sure there are many other new bottles out there now, because it was 2.5 years ago that we used them. It's true, though--you never know which ones your LO will like, so try many brands/types--maybe you'll get lucky and LO's favorite will be a cheap brand!!
  • I used Avent w/ DD, and fortunately didn't have any problems. I also liked that they were easy to find, including at pharmacies, etc. so if I forgot one for daycare I could just run out quickly. I never had to deal with any of the "nipple confusion" stuff, but I wonder if that was partly due to the fact that I had to introduce a bottle when she was about 1 wk (I had to pump due to latching issues). But I agree with the idea that you start out w/ a couple of different bottles and see what works best.

  • I used Dr. brown's bottles on my first child. I introduced the bottle at two weeks but I hear every baby is different.

  • I've signed up for the Breastflow and Adiri starter kits to see which one LO prefers.  Both have come highly recommended from by EBF friends who also work and need the option of a bottle during those days.

My SIL used platex drop-ins for my niece and nephew, but she only BF for 6 months and most of the time was exclusively pumping, so I am not sure whether or not "nipple confusion" is a factor.

That said, I do think there is something to choosing something that mimics the shape of your breasts.
