2nd Trimester

Anyone not have the NT Scan?

My doctor was not the best and didn't offer it to me even after I mentioned it. So I left her practice and I have an appointment with a new doctor on Monday, but I realize it will be too late for the test. Are there other tests you can have done, did you regret not getting it? I am just worried that something could be wrong and b/c of my incompetent doctor, I may have put the baby in harm.

Re: Anyone not have the NT Scan?

  • We didn't get one.  We have no family history of anything and were not worried about anything so we skipped it.

  • I didn't. We are not high risk so we chose not to. We opted to have the Penta Screen around week 15 (just a blood draw). I think the Penta screen give you about an 85% accuracy rate as to the probability for the same disorders. If you are not high risk, you didn't harm your baby. (Actually, you didn't harm your baby even if you ARE high risk because the screening only gives you a probability).

  • There are blood screens they do in 2nd trimester.  Ask your doctor!  I was surprised they offered them because we did do NT scan + blood screening at 12 weeks, too.
  • DH and I chose not to do the NT scan and I have absolutely no regrets about that decision.

If something is wrong, the NT scan would detect it, but there isn't much that they can do about it, which is one of the main reasons DH and I chose not to go through with it. If you are really concerned, there are other tests that can be done when you get closer to 20 weeks to determine if there are chomosomal abnormalities, but in the meantime, try not to worry- it's not good for you or your LO!

  • We didn't get one with any of our pregnancies.  I have no regrets.

  • I had the NT scan, but...

your dr should offer you a quad screen (Blood test) about 15-17 weeks.  It also looks for Down's syndrome, and a few other genetic abnormalities.  It has a higher false postive rate than an NT scan but it basically looks for the same abnormalities.

  • I did have it done but to hopefully make you feel better, I have LOTS of friends who opted not to do it.  Plus, my brother-in-law is an OB/GYN and he told us that he probably wouldn't have his own wife do it.  He said the cases of false positives (meaning indicating there may be a problem) are not insignificant.  He really didn't think it was necessary.
  • Thanks ladies. I do believe the nurse at the new practice did mention something about doing a blood screen and that the doctor would talk with me about it. It just seems like everyone has had the NT scan. I will try to cut my worry down.
  • I didn't have the NT scan...by the time I thought about it, it was too late.  I did have the AFP test done (which also is a test for Down's, etc) at around 15 weeks or so.  I don't regret not getting the NT scan, because it wouldn't have changed my view on the baby or this pregnancy.

  • We didn't get one.  We are low risk, and no matter what the scan said, we'd keep the baby.  Also, I would worry continuously if I had a 1 in 20 chance of ___ too.

  • Nope, we don't have any concerns with histories, etc...so we opted not to.

  • I didn't have it and was never offered it. Its very normal to not even be offered it if your pregnancy is not high risk. I dont think your putting baby at any additional harm by not getting it if you dont have any other risk factors.

  • I didn't get any of the optional tests done. The anatomy u/s was enough for us.
  • theres really nothing that can be done and it would just cause added stress (to me) so we chose to skip it... neither side of the family has any risk associated w/ it so i dont at all regret the decision....
