2nd Trimester

PCOS Bumpies

Good afternoon, ladies.

I had been lurking for a couple of days waiting for the 2 days to pass so I could actually post.  I'm a plus-size girl, and in my 20 weeks have not gained any weight.  I'm not concerned with that, since it's been said that overweight women should only gain 15-20lbs.

My concern is that I was taking Metformin for PCOS, and when I found out I was pg, my GP told me to stop taking it until I could get to an OB.  My new OB  told me to keep taking it....and when I called yesterday to double check if I should continue...they called me back to say they wanted me on a glucometer 4x/day 2d/week.  I explained that I don't take Metformin for Type 2, but for PCOS, and that my A1C in June was 5.7--which I know is borderline.  My mom has Type 1, which I know doesn't have anything to do with the other.

I guess I don't understand why they want me to test...why don't they just give me the 1hr/3hr test and get it over with? I had read in several medical journals that Metformin significantly reduces the risk of GD...and I told them I had no issues staying on it for that very reason.  OH well.....love me some finger prickin'!  At least DH is getting me the cool Onetouch Ultra Mini in green.... :)

Re: PCOS Bumpies

  • I have PCOS and my OB took me off at 16 weeks.  She said there really aren't any good studies out past that point.  She said I have a higher risk of getting GD, but Met is not the solution.

I would get a second opinion.

  • My doctor told me to continue taking it, and that studies show it reduces the chance for GD.  good luck.
  • My doctor told me to keep taking Met. She said new studies are indicating that it reduces the risk of GD.

I have however been tested in a 1hr and 3hr glucose test at 20 weeks. I have another scheduled for 28 weeks. I would think they would test you first. I don't understand the assumption that you will have GD. I passed my first 3 hour and hope to pass the second one. Unless I am diagnosed with GD, I won't be testing my blood sugar. Insulin resistant PCOS isn't diabetes.

  • My RE put me on Met when we were TTC and I was told to stay on it until 2nd trimester.  My perinatologist wanted me to take a 3 hour glucose test a few weeks back to see if I'm insuline rsistant because my RE never tested me for it before he put me on the Met.

I wasn't able to complete the 3 hour gtt because I vomited, so the peri had me start monitoring my blood sugars at home 4x/day everyday.  This past Monday he put me back on the Met because some of my levels were slightly elevated almost everyday for the last couple weeks.

  • I agree...and that's why I made sure to explain to the nurse who called me that I don't have type 2, that it's for IR related PCOS.  I just think it is unnecessary since I'm going for the big US on Wednesday.  I guess they want some data so they can make the call on it that day. Oh well...
  • Well good luck with everything. Just keep advocating for yourself and they should listen. And- it isn't like the extra information could hurt really- well maybe it could hurt your fingers :)

Have fun at the BIG U/S!!
