Oh great - Circumcision

My husband is watching a YouTube video of an actual circumcision.  I'm not watching it, but I can hear the poor baby screaming.  I don't know if I could ever bring myself to watch it, which is horrible, because I'm pro-circumcision.  I want my baby to be as clean as possible down there, and the thought of build-up and infection makes me ill (I'm kind of a neat freak). We also have a history of UTIs in our family, and I'd be horrified if our son got a bad infection, and needed to be circumcised later in life.  I realize this is a controversial subject, but is it horrible of me to want something like that for our son even though I wouldn't be able to watch it??

Re: Oh great - Circumcision

  • wait, why is he watching the circumcision...? we're doing it and i will not be watching.

  • He's watching the video for the sake of educating himself on this decision.  He's still on the fence about it.
  • I don't think so. We are going to circ. baby if he is a boy but I have already told DH he will have to bring the baby because I can't stand the thought of doing it. It is the same way with shots. I know they are needed but I can't think of handing my kid over to soem one who I know will hurt him/her...even if it is needed.

  • Try not to think about it.  It's best in the long run, he'll be sore for a couple days and then all better.  We are doing circumsion too for our son.  When you think about it, it's kind of brutal but he'll be fine as soon as it's done.  ; p

  • There are parts of your post that come off ass-y.

Coming from a mother of a child that is circumsized, and one who is not...they are both "as clean as possible". It's called caring for them, and it's actually easier to care for my uncircumsized son.

That said, no, I don't think that there is anything wrong with not watching.

  • We're doing this as well.  There's no way that I would watch my baby or any other baby though. Ugh, kind of makes you feel like a bad mom.  But like you said we all have reasons for making this decision.

yup- she's right! and later on he won't remember a thing! We are going to circ our new boy- but I am for sure not watching...

  • I was with my son during his circumcision, he was a month old. Honestly the only part that he cried was the numbing shot. He didn't cry through the rest of it at all and it never bothered him during the healing process. I didn't really watch closely during the procedure, but it was pretty quick and simple it seemed.

  • I have been on the fence about it too in all honesty... I want to get it done and so does my FOB but I hate to throw my poor infant right into surgery... but I also hate to wait. So I'm figuring in the next 20 weeks, I will be able to decide. But for now... still on the fence about it.

Wow - a little harsh there with your adjective.

A little harsh implying that not circumcised is not "as clean as possible". There is nothing unclean about an uncircumcised baby.

I put the decision in DH's hands, and I think that we're going with noncircumcision.  If something happens, and it HAS to be done, fine.  But, we would like to give him a choice in this matter, so we're going to not do it, and allow him to make his own decision later in life.

I was thinking the same thing honestly... girls at work are mad at me about it... but I think that is a little too personal for me to decide for him! and once it's done, you can't take it back!

  • my Dh is from guatamal isent and non of his brothers are either, he has never had any sort of problem because he isent, and his mother managed to keep her 5 boys from ever having a infection, i think that's a lame excuse to use, as long as you clean your baby it will be fine,

  • I'm not sure what kind of circumcision your DH found on youtube, but I saw a few babies being circumsized in the NICU (I wasn't there when DS was), and they definitely did not scream like that.

Find out what kind of anesthetic your baby will get. I know mine had a local or something like that, and they also let him suck on something sugary afterwards. Like I said, I wasn't there for the actual procedure, but he didn't seem to notice it in the slightest after.
