stupid confession... labor question.. 2nd + time moms

My biggest fear of pregnancy is throwing up during labor. Did you? And what made you throw up?

Re: stupid confession... labor question.. 2nd + time moms

  • I did with DS; I went into labor on my own and decided to go to Chili's before heading to the hospital. With DD I didn't, but I was induced and hadn't eaten anything but ice chips all day

  • Yes, from the pitocin.  If DH was in the room eating and I could see it or smell it I got sick.  Popsicles even made me sick!  It wasn't that bad though and as soon as I gave birth I was fine.  I'm more afraid of pooping during labor!
  • Yes, I think it was because I hadn't taken anything for my horrible heartburn/acid reflux in over 12 hours.  At one point I broke down and snuck a few tums from my bag while waiting 3 hours for the pharmacy to send some up.

  • Yes.  Labor made me throw up.  Then when I was going in for the c/s, they gave me this nasty stuff to drink and I threw that up.  And then the morphine made me throw up for 12 hours after the c/s.
  • No, I didn't.

And it has nothing to do with whether or not you ate. FWIW, I ate a big dinner before going to the hospital for cervix ripening, then ate breakfast (provided by the hospital) a few hours before they started Pitocin, and drank juice throughout the day. No vomiting.

That said, it's not uncommon. It was one of my big fears about labor last time around, too. For some reason, this time, it's not such a concern for me. Maybe because I've been dealing with baby poop and vomit for two years now, so what's a little more vomit? Wink

  • I'm more afraid of pooping while in labor. I've heard it happens and the doctor is?unfazed?typically, but come on now...

Throwing up doesn't sound very fun, either.?

  • I didn't throw up either time.
  • No, I didn't.  I almost did when they started the Pitocin, but some ice chips helped me feel better.
  • I threw up with DS bc of the meds they used for my induction and then before i had my c/s the stuff they gave me to drink made me throw up and when they were wheeling me down to the operating room I threw up on my nurse.  She didn't seemed fazed by it and said don't worry about it, it happens a lot.  And the next day I felt quesy bc of the meds.  I was fine after that.  I wouldn't worry about it.  I'm sure that the majority of ppl vomit during labour.

  • I did not throw up. I did not have drugs though. Narcotics likely would have made me sick, but that's just my experience with drugs.

  • My sister didn't poo or vomit when induced. She was extremely concerned about pooing on the table.

  • I was lucky and had no fluids come out of anywhere
  • No.  No throwing up, no nausea at all.  I had pitocin, but it may have been a low dose--I wasn't induced, Dr. just used it after my epidural to keep things moving along, since I guess sometimes the epi can slow contractions.  At any rate, I didn't have any problems at all.  I also hadn't eaten anything since the night before, so by the time I delivered, I hadn't eaten in about 24 hours.  They wouldn't even give me a popsicle once I was admitted.  But things went very smoothly.  I was able to sort of nap during the last part of active labor, up until the nurse came in and told me it was time to push.

I had a beautiful labor and delivery, and I hope it's exactly the same next time!  The recovery, however...whew.  That was the tough part for me!

  • My OB professor said some women do just because of the labor process. It's a sign that she's transitioning from active labor into the delivery phase.

  • I didnt with DS. I also had no meds. But if you do barf, and it's not from drugs, then it's a great sign you're in transition and almost done!

  • Yup, during transition I threw up a little bit.  I was expecting a little kidney-shaped plastic bowl, but I got a cylindrical-shaped bag and remember thinking, "What is this thing?  OK.  I Need. To. Push. Now!"

  • I did not.  I did feel extremely nauseous after one of the pain meds they gave me before my epi (and had planned to refuse it when in labor with DS, but I barely made it to the hospital in time for an epi).

  • nope didn't throw up-didn't even know that was a possibility.  i did get horrible shakes though-which sucked.
  • nope. i actually wasnt even nauseous...hopefully its the same this time!
  • i should add that i was on pitocin for 2 whole days prior to labor and had full meals the entire time-except for after contractions started-then just some toast.   my mom was amazed that they let me eat so much.
  • I didn't, but if I hadn't gotten my epi, I would have. I used to vomit from menstrual cramps, and well, contractions are like menstrual cramps times 1000, so I was expecting it. I got stuck at around 6 1/2 cm and my contractions were continual, no breaks in between, so once my epi kicked in, I was golden!
  • I literally threw up with every contraction for about 4 hours- including the entire time I was pushing (1 hour and 45 minutes). While I really hope it doesn't happen again, I've learned that I really don't have any control at that point.
  • I personally did not throw up, but I've known several people who have.  I've heard some people say it was their body's way of dealing w/ the stress and pain of labor and then I've heard other people say it was b/c they ate before they went in.
  • I threw up while I was pushing. I don't quite know why, but I didn't care at the time. It's certainly not a fear this time.
  • I did as I went into transition.  I also had diarrhea.  It's your body's way of cleaning your system out so you can get down to business.
